Description: A misty view across low-lying swampy land with rushes in the foreground, the lagoon of the Chatham Islands and low hills in the background Attributed on accession to the Library as the work of Sophie Augusta Lysaght; however a note on the verso states 'By LML' (Louisa Marion Lysaght, later Atkinson, sister of Sophie Lysaght). The place name Awapatiki appears to be no longer in use. Te Whanga Lagoon is open to the sea at Waikawa, on the east of Chatham. Dating: Probably painted between 1885 and 1891, when the artist's sister Sophia Moore was living on the Chathams at Moreroa. Inscriptions: Verso - in pencil, probably inscribed after the event by the artist with an additional note in the hand of John L Moore: title and 'By LML'; also a note 'Awapatiki is where the lake ran out into the sea.
