Ahuahu, Puke Nui

Name of volcanic peak and locality close to Ohaeawai and Lake Omapere, Northland. Te Ahuahu Pā was the site of a battle on 12 June 1845 between British forces and Hone Heke, during the Northern War (1845-1846).

Watling family : Papers

Description: Collection comprises holograph correspondence from Amy Caroline Watling to her family in England. The letters begin as Mrs Watling, her husband and her two youngest children travelled out from England to New Zealand aboard the steam ship 'Remuera' (1912). The letters continue for a period after their arrival in New Zealand, detailing their initial travels within the country and their family life (1912-1913). The original letters continue until June 1913. There is also a partial typescript of these letters with a running commentary. The transcripts include other letters not in the manuscript collection and continue up until May 1915. There is also a biographical history of the Watling family, a family tree and two scanned photographs. Title supplied by Library Arrangement: The donor, Prudence Stokes, arranged the collection and provided further transcripts and an account of the Watling family before donating it to the Alexander Turnbull Library in 2017. May Caroline Watling and her family travelled from England to New Zealand on the SS Remuera in 1912 and lived with relatives at Te Ahu Ahu, Ōhaeawai and Auckland before returning to England in 1920. Prue Stokes collected and arranged the letters of her grandmother, provided a partial transcript and added a commentary, as well as a biographical history of the Watling family, a family tree and two scanned photographs. Description: Items originally in a box Binney labelled 'Prophet photos' Chiefly photographs of Maori grave markers in the Far North district (but also some in Otaki, Onehunga, Matata and Whangara) taken in 1971, 1972, 1975 and 1983 by Kendrick Smithyman. Many show the symbols of the heart, diamond, club and spade and some, or all, of these, may be the work of carver Nutana Mapi. Also a few Pakeha graves. Also includes photographs of other subjects taken by Smithyman: a drawing by Eric Lee-Johnson of a carved wooden grave marker at Rangiahua; a clock tower at Rangiahua; a clock tower at Otago University; a carved wooden altar piece in a church at Motukaraka. Also includes a photograph of Penetana Papahurihia's grave marker taken by historian Ruth Miriam Ross in 1972, and an accompanying letter from Ross to Judith, dated about 1976, noting the inscription on the stone and further details. Description: An extensive view at Waimate North, with a windmill, the mission station and the church on the horizon. Bracken in the foreground and a rutted dirt road running away into the distance. Fenced paddocks to the right and three small people walking away on the road to the left. Several dead trees in the foreground. Compare a very similar work by Cyprian Bridge at A-079-035 The work appears to have been part of a sketchbook at an earlier stage, with signs of having been bound on its left side. Probably removed by the Library from album E-320-f, which contained 16 sketches on acquisition by Alexander Turnbull in 1893.
