Description: Shows a scene of a lake or broad river, with two figures in the left foreground, one bending over a narrow plank or boat. Across the water are one or two huts, and there are hills in the distance. Plate 154 in Domeny de Rienzi's book. In the French edition, Danvin is inscribed as the copyist and Chavannes as the engraver, but the Italian version appears to be by a different engraver. Description: The top image is based on an original drawing by Sydney Parkinson in 1769, shows an outrigger boat with a sail, and in the left foreground a man paddling on a raft. There is a further sailed canoe in the left distance and headlands in the right background. In the centre middle background is a fence enclosure containing a roofed platform on which a shrouded body is lying. Description: A large group of Europeans on the right, including Captain James Wilson and his nephew William Wilson meeting with Tahitians on the left, including the Tahitian King and Queen. The King and Queen are held aloft on the shoulders of their bearers. Their blind witch doctor is crouching to the left. The picture was commissioned by the London Missionary Society. The oil painting from which this print was taken was commissioned from Smirke, the artist, by the London Missionary Society to commemorate the success of Captain Wilson's voyage to Tahiti. They sold the copyright to the print seller Jeffries in return for the first 400 copies of the print (100 coloured and 300 plain). See "European Vision and the South Pacific" by Bernard Smith, pp. 144-147; Also "Portraits of the Famous and Infamous" p. 324. Description: A view of the top point of Tahiti-nui, called Point Venus, at the tip of Matavai Bay. The artist has added 'Where Capt. Cook landed in 1768 [1769]. Ship Harpley.' It shows a French fort and soldiers. One of the soldiers stands with the man identified as the Captain. A large stone left by Cook is also seen. A more modern memorial was erected by the French in 1901. Page not numbered as the rest are, and dated as one year later - this is likely to be an error. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Explorer Samuel Wallis' ship surrounded by 35 canoes at Matavai Bay, Tahiti. The drawing is dated two days after the arrival of the Dolphin at Matavai Bay, Tahiti, the first European visit to Tahiti. The ship's sails are furled. The canoes are of varying sizes and styles, some with a superstructure and at least one double-hulled. There is a large dwelling by the shore in the left foreground. Coconut palms line the shore and the tall hills behind are bush-clad. Tahiti was named King George III Island by Wallis, but reverted to its local name when Captain James Cook visited, two years later. Other Titles - Tahiti Inscriptions: Verso - top right - [in pencil] King George III Island June 26 1767. [Also in centre, in pencil, a large] 7 Related views: A similar view is in the National Library of Australia 'Otaheite or King Georges Island', signed lower left S Wallis.
