Description: Scenic photographs of the Southern Alps, Lake Matheson and Lake Kanieri, Punakaiki and a bush railway near Hokitika, taken between circa 1910s to 1940s by various unidentified photographers, except one (no. 38) by John Wesley Mitchell which has an inscription on the back "Wishing you the compliments of the season, 1940, Lake Kanieri" signed J.W. Mitchell. There are many unidentified views; those identified include several taken from the Annette Plateau with the snowfield on the Sealey Range, McKenzie Plains, Liebig Range, various peaks including Isabel, Eric, Maungama, Eagle, and the Mueller Glacier, Mt Sealey; other views are taken from Mount Conrad in the Liebig Range and include the Murchison and Mannering Glaciers, the Malte Brun Range, Mounts Cooper, Elie de Beaumont and the Hochstetter Dome. Photograph no. 39 shows an unidentified light-coloured ship with three funnels (possibly the Empress of Britain), at sea, and a number of small ships drawn up alongside, in an unidentified location. Photograph no. 45, is inscribed on the back: "Mt Mannering from the south west ridge of the unnamed peak. Wataroa Pass upper right. Apperley & Sweney[?] photo". Many of the identified images have pencilled information in the top left hand corner which reads "H.O.F." and a series of numbers. Quantity: 51 b&w original photographic print(s). All the views are identified, seen from various sites including from the Murchison Glacier and neve; from Whataroa Pass; from Mt Acland; from the summit of Mt Mannering; from Mount Sydney King; from the Classen Saddle; from Richmond Peak; from the Ant-Hill; from Mount Hutton; from Hackel [i.e. Haeckel] Peak; and from Mount Conrad. Many of the named physical features are listed above in "places". On the verso of all the images the initials "H.O.F." is printed in the top left hand corner, with information about location printed along the lower edge. Description: Album of photographs taken by mountaineer and photographer Arthur Sutton-Turner, all related to the Southern Alps and all with good captions. People climbing with Sutton-Turner include Jack Lippe and T A Fletcher. A number of images relate to their journey towards the mountains, stopping at two sheep stations, the Richmond Station at Lake Tekapo, and Lilybank Station. At Lilybank, Sutton-Turner took a number of photographs of sheep being mustered from the High Country ready for shearing, and finally trucks being loaded with wool bales for sale in Fairlie.
