Description: Alpine views in the South Island and two views of rock formations in the North Island taken by G E Mannering. There are also four images of the Matterhorn in Switzerland, which were probably all taken by Wehrli AG, a photographic company between 1900 and 1924 (nos. 27, 32, 50 and 57). Images numbered 36, 41 and 47 show views from the Godley Riverbed, with the various mountains identified in pencil on the back. No. 7 shows clouds above Waiho with the note "The condensing power of mountains, Waiho". Several images look down to Bealey township from the top of the pipeline. Photograph 24 is probably of the helichrysum species. Several views show close-ups of glaciers, including ice pinnacles on the Franz Josef Glacier (no. 20); one of "hummocky ice" on the Godley Glacier (no. 37); Mannering's two young sons on the Franz Josef Glacier (no. 38); broken ice on Franz Josef Glacier (no. 39); a sand cone on the Tasman Glacier, with four women and three men in the backgound (no. 43); and the terminal glacier face (Franz Josef?). Image no. 25 has identification which reads "Organs - Sandstone cliffs on Mahaka (Mohaka?) River, Hawke's Bay. Image no. 34 shows Samuel Butler's cottage at Mesopotamia Station; and no. 56 probably shows the Cass Field Station. Many of the images by Marcel Kurz show mountaineers, bivouacs and camping sites in the mountains, including the Pioneer Ridge Bivvy. Image no. 133, taken by Marcel Kurz shows Ned Porter, Clive Barker and Doris Barker (later Mrs Porter), on the second ascent of Mount Haidinger in 1927. Most identified places are listed above. Description: Alpine views, chiefly taken by Harold (Ned) Porter, circa 1923 to 1927. The first two photographs were taken by Swiss guide Marcel Kurz who accompanied Porter. Interspersed with Porter's photographs are a few taken by Dr F W Vollmann, a German archaeologist who spent some time in 1909 climbing in the Southern Alps. The last photograph (no. 157) was taken by H O Frind. Inserted between photographs nos 075 and 076 is a slip with hand-drawn map of the Bonar Glacier Plain showing climbing routes, the Matukituki River and Saddle, Mounts Bevan and Joffre, and positions of campsites used (by Porter?). A number of images show unidentified mountaineers. Most of the photographs are collected in sequences wrapped in paper folders. Description: Album of photographs taken by mountaineer and photographer Arthur Sutton-Turner, all related to the Southern Alps and all with good captions. People climbing with Sutton-Turner include Jack Lippe and T A Fletcher. A number of images relate to their journey towards the mountains, stopping at two sheep stations, the Richmond Station at Lake Tekapo, and Lilybank Station. At Lilybank, Sutton-Turner took a number of photographs of sheep being mustered from the High Country ready for shearing, and finally trucks being loaded with wool bales for sale in Fairlie.
