Description: Men on the Whatipu Wharf near the entrance to Manukau Harbour. Photograph taken by William Williams some time from the early 1900s to the 1920s. Whatipu Wharf was at the end of the tramway from Piha and served the Piha timber industry. Kauri logs and processed timber were shipped from the wharf.

Description: Section of the beach tramway between Karekare and Whatipu, showing the Whatipu Wharf, sheltered by the rock Paratutae. Photograph taken by Albert Percy Godber, between 1915 and 1916. An original print from this negative is at Pa1-o-195 (Godber album vol 101, p 19.) This image is reproduced in "The Piha Tramway" by David Lowe, where he gives the date as circa 1920 "the wharf about 1920 in its much extended and final form". However the Godber Album (Vol 101) in which there are many images of the Piha Tramway etc. gives 1915-1916 as the dates in which Godber was in the area. Inscriptions: Album page - The "Heads" Wharf. This wharf was built for transporting timber from the kauri forests in the Piha and Karekare areas. Quantity: 1 b&w original negative(s).
