Tewera Island

A small island in the D'Entrecasteaux group off the south eastern coast of Papua New Guinea. Its close companion is Uama Island, and both are about 15 kms east of Fergusson Island.

Description: Photographs taken during Reo Fortune's return to Dobu and Tewera in 1959 include islands seen from the deck of an approaching ship, men in boats and canoes, men working on some sort of fabric which may be a fishing net, men gathered in a building, women in traditional and modern dress, and children in traditional dress on a beach. Photographs taken during Fortune's return to Dobu in 1970/71 include gatherings of people in a village, adults and children going about their daily lives, couples dressed for western style weddings, and the launch of 2 new canoes. Arrangement: Original negatives from 1959 at 35mm, 80198 to 35mm, 81110, and 35mm, 81144 to 35mm, 81147. Original negatives from 1970-71 at 35mm, 81111 to 35mm, 81143, and 35mm, 81149 to 35mm, 81161. Description: Scenes and portraits taken by Reo Fortune in Papua New Guinea. Comprises images on Dobu Island and Tewara Island in 1959; on Manus Island 1928-29; and of the Arapesh people (of northern central Papua New Guinea) 1931-32 or 1935-36. Other - Slides are labelled Cambridge Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology because Fortune was based there at the time these slides were made. Source of descriptive information - Library client Relationship complexity - 1/2-0230357-F has been used to produce PA11-210-67, and consequently has been able to be identified. There may be further similar examples. Arrangement: PA11-210-01 to PA11-210-21 were taken at Manus Island in 1928 or 1929. PA11-210-22 to PA11-210-40 were taken of the Arapesh people in 1931-1932, or 1935-1936. PA11-210-41 to PA11-210-50 are probably images of the Arapesh people taken in 1931-1932, or 1935-1936. PA11-210-51 to PA11-210-65 were taken during Fortune's return to Dobu and Tewera Islands in 1959. PA11-210-66 is possibly of Lake Chambri, photographed between 1928 and 1959. PA11-210-67 is a Mundugumor ceremonial mask, photographed betweeen 1928-1959. PA11-210-68 to PA11-210-92 are unidentified, photographed between 1928 and 1959.
