Description: A washout on the road from Whakatane to Te Teko, photographed on St Patrick's Day, 17 March 1904, by Malcolm Ross, during the visit of Lord Ranfurly to the Bay of Plenty.. Inscriptions: Album page - beneath image - En route to Te Teko - crossing the Whakatane R. After attending the St Patrick's Day race meeting at Whakatane, the vice-regal party left for Te Teko at 4pm, and reached their destination by nightfall. A few miles past the Whakatane River "a big culvert had been entirely washed away, leaving a great gap across the road." (source: Malcolm Ross, "Through Tuhoe Land"). Description: Album of photographs relating to a trip taken by a group travelling on the first "Motor Reliability Contest" in 1906; probably created and in part photographed by Robert M McKnight. The contest involved ten cars (4 Daracqs, 2 Cadillacs, and 1 Rover, 1 steam car, 1 Oldsmobile and 1 Leyland) travelling 400 miles from Auckland to Taupo and back. Photographs relating to the contest, including scenes photographed during the trip are on even numbered pages from 2 to 36, possibly taken by R M McKnight in 1906; odd numbered pages from 1 to 63, were taken by unidentified professional photographers, circa the 1880s to 1890s; all relating to the route taken on the 1906 road contest. Most of the earlier photographs are scenes in the thermal area around the Wairakei and Bay of Plenty Regions and include images of the Pink and White Terraces taken before and after the 1886 Tarawera Eruption. One of these earlier images shows "Macandrew and party at Wairakei." Views of the Motor Reliablity Contest show scenes taken on the route; groups of people involved; lineups of all ten cars; and one car fording a river. The "Motor reliability contest" was held under the ausspices of the Auckland Automobile Association (Press, Volume LXII, Issue 12451, 14 March 1906, Page 7, https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/CHP19060314.2.31). contests of the same name were held in Melbourne, Australia, and other countires. Description: Shows a view of two Maori greeting each other in a landscape setting that features a pathway between two walls of rock, spanned by a bridge. One of the Maori stands on the bridge, waving down to greet the other, who walks along the path below, and who waves back up to him. The bridge appears flat and solid and has railings supported by forked branches. Native trees and bush also feature in the scene Adhered to the back of the frame is a typewritten label, identifying the place depicted; although the words 'New Zealand' are legible, the actual location is not. Description: One-way bridge over the Rangitaiki River at Te Teko, Whakatane District. There is a house on the other side of the river with verandahs around two sides. Photographed by Albert Percy Godber circa 1920s. Library client identified the building in the photograph, September 2009. The Te Teko bridge was first in use in December 1915. Replaced circa 1980. The building on the other side of the river is a hotel today (2009). It was owned by a Mrs Dunderdale as a guesthouse/roadstop (info from Alister Johnson, 2009). Quantity: 1 b&w original negative(s).
