Description: Contains photographs relating to the Waikaremoana Hydroelectric Power Scheme taken by the Otago Daily Times, and a photographer possibly named John Welsh, likely between 1926 and 1953. Images show landscapes, waterways, buildings, and hydro-electric technology around Waikaremoana, focusing on the Tuai power station. Almost all prints are captioned. 18 are inscribed with 'Welsh, Hastings'. Most images depict the Tuai Power Station under construction and the landscape at Lake Whakamarino. This includes multiple views of the powerhouse under scaffolding and its surroundings (mountains, temporary buildings, a rugby field, staff quarters, sheep, power lines, and construction equipment). Images also depict the outdoor technology at Tuai (surge chamber, large double pipeline, pylons, and voltage step-up stations). One image shows the powerhouse without scaffolding in use. Five prints depict waterways upstream of Tuai. These include: Lake Waikaremoana’s overflow at Onepoto Bay, an artificial waterway diverting water to Lake Kaitawa, the Waikaretaheke River, and two views of the Kaitawa storage lake, taken during and after construction. Four prints depict the Tuai construction site in detail. Images show: workers, large scale equipment (cranes, concrete mixers), and multiple views of a generator under construction inside the powerhouse. The generator is labelled ‘Metropolitan-Vickers Manchester’ and ‘Armstrong Whitworth Manchester England’. Two images not precisely identified as the Tuai Power Station depict interiors.
