Description: Family photographs relating to the McCurdie family. Many are groups of friends and family, some of whom are identified with both Christian and surnames. These include wedding photographs of Marjorie Whitton who married J.W. Nicolls on March 31, 1921 at Oamaru, with Betty and Mary Whitton as bridesmaids. Several views of homes include Woodcroft (the home of Dr John Kinder), Werneth (a house at Atawhai, Nelson), The Moorings (the home of W. & Lucy Churchward at Springlands, Blenheim), and Stonycroft (home of Mr & Mrs Free, at Masterton). One view is of snow in Christchurch city in July 1918, and one shows decorations in the interior of Dunedin Hospital for the visit of the Prince of Wales in May 1920. Description: Album of photographs taken in the Otago and Southland Regions, by unidentified photographers. All the locations are well identified. Some of the images are related to railways, including railway tunnels (e.g. The Caversham Tunnel when under construction circa 1909), and the Hunts Road Tunnel; the Clutha Railway Bridge; the Wingatui Signal Box; the Balclutha Railway Station, railway yards, and sales-yards; railway barns; D-class engine (New Zealand Railways steam-engine No. 355); the Owaka Express; and bush tramway tracks, one sawmill typical of small mills in the Catlins area. Many of the images are taken with an emphasis on atmosphere, including sunsets, stormy days on the coast near Dunedin, evening at Ocean Beach, storm clouds at Lawyer's Head, and "By beach and sand-hill". Godber album 10

Description: Album of photographs chiefly taken by Albert Percy Godber, relating to his family, his work and his interests. Family photographs include portraits of his wife (Laura) and two children (William and Phyllis), and scenes of their home in Whiteman's Valley Road, Silverstream; views of the Hutt Valley including large numbers of cars travelling to Trentham Racecourse, and the Hutt River. Another group of images relate to a holiday at the Mendip Hills Homestead in Canterbury, with scenes of farm life, including haymaking, merino sheep, and farm buildings. During their stay in the South Island Godber also took photographs of Dunedin (including the Ross Reservoir, Otago Boys' High School, Seacliff Mental Hospital, the 1926 Dunedin Exhibition, and the Hillside Railway Workshops); Invercargill (including the Invercargill Railway Workshops); Stewart Island, Moeraki, Tuatapere, Waiau River, Oamaru and Port Chalmers. Various railway stations in Canterbury and Otago, the Burnside Iron Mills, and the Rosslyn Mills. Godber was a volunteer fireman with the Petone Fire Brigade with the album including views of the building, groups of firemen, fire engines and other fire fighting equipment, and a building in Petone damaged by fire. In his work with New Zealand Railways, mainly at the Petone Railway Workshops, he took interior photographs of various buildings, including the Machine Shop and finishing benches, the engine room, lathes, boilers, and fitting shops. He also took photographs of many of the steam engines that were built and worked on at the workshops. One scene shows a group of men watching a fight. Many images show his interest in logging railways, particularly in the Piha, Karekare, Anawhata area. Scenes of logging camps, various methods of transporting logs including bullock teams, logging trains, and dams created and then tripped to send logs down by river, and timber mills. Other topics covered in Godber's photographs are scenes at Maori marae and meeting houses, with some of the people identified; Maori carving and rafter designs; beekeeping, and gold mining. McIntosh album 12

Description: Photographs, probably taken by G W Barltrop. Scenes in the first part of the album are of the South Island, mostly around the Dunedin area, and further south, in Invercargill and Bluff. There are two panoramas, one of Port Chalmers and one of Lumsden. Most are landscapes, but a few show groups of people, including five young girls in the Dunedin Botanical Gardens, and a man driving a horse and buggy at Manuka Creek, with two young women sitting beside him, and a third woman standing by the horse's head. A graveyard scene is a close-up view of two headstones, one for Catherine Louisa Schaw (widow of John S Schaw), who died in 1874 aged 71. North Island scenes show a church at Levin; and views of the countryside, a bullock pulling a laden cart, and at the Rimutaka Summit all taken on a train journey. Group portraits include one of a large family group, with two young boys in the foreground with a cricket bat and cricket pads; and two large groups of men and women associated with the Missions to Seamen. One image show a plaque erected `In memory of twelve officers and seamen who were drowned or died from exposure, by the wreck of the Barque Lizzie Bell near the Oeo River, July 24 1901, erected by members and friends of the Missions to seamen, Wellington, New Zealand'. Description: Album of photographs chiefly taken in the South Island, except for one view of `Woodcroft', the home of Dr John Kinder in Arney Road, Remuera from about 1880 until his death in 1903. Many of the South Island views are related to early surveyors William Duncan Ross McCurdie and his wife Olga McCurdie, and Ernest Herbert Wilmot, who were surveying land near Tahakopa, Tautuku, McLennan Valley and the Catlins. Several show the homes of early settlers in the Tahakopa Valley. Of particular interest are a view of women voting at their first election at Tahakopa (28.11.1893); one of an early settler's first home at Tahakopa; the first boat sailing up to Mr McCurdie's camp; and a group of horsemen on a beach, parading before going to war (1914). Individual views show scenes including a match played between the English cricket team vs Wellington, at the Basin Reserve, March 23-24, 1888; fire that destroyed the offices of Buckley & Co, a legal firm in Wellington, circa 1890s; views of a yachting party in Pelorus Sound; a house built of punga logs, circa 1858; various houses belonging to the Field and Hodgkins families, including Cranmore Lodge (Dunedin), and the Field house in Everton Terrace (Wellington). Also includes photographs of the Hodgkins' rented house in Ravensbourne.
