Remutaka

A hill at 725m that marks the northern extent of Remutaka Range. Following the passage of the Rangitāne Tū Mai Rā (Wairarapa Tamaki nui-ā-Rua) Claims Settlement Act 2017, the name of the range officially changed to Remutaka.

Description: Views of New Zealand collected by Invercargill firm Erskine & Whitmore. Scenes taken by various photographers including Hart, Campbell & Co., and Coxhead & Le Sueur. Several views show Queenstown under floods in 1878; others of the Queenstown-Lakes Region, Waitati, Gore and Dunedin in the South Island. In the North Island, one shows a large picnic party travelling in three horse-drawn coaches, stopped at Ngauranga; many show a range of steam locomotives including J Class, K Class, F43, E22, H Class and A Class, in the Upper Hutt area, the Wairarapa, and on the Rimutaka line. Several at the end of the album show the effects of a major slip which blocked the mouth of the Summit Tunnel at the top of the Rimutaka Incline. Description: Album of photographs collected by Albert Percy Godber which related to his interests. Photographers include Daniel Manders Beere, William Thomas Locke Travers and James Ring. Scenes in Australia include Adelaide waterworks, Currency Creek, the Murray River Bridge, the Thorndon Park Reservoir, and Port Adelaide River road & rail bridge. New Zealand scenes are chiefly in the South island, many relating to early railway construction, particularly areas involved in working on the Dunedin to Balclutha railway along the Waimakariri River, and around the Purakanui Cliffs. Of particular interest throughout the album are the construction and design of railway features such as bridges, viaducts and tunnels. North Island railway scenes include the Rimutaka Incline, the bend known as `Siberia', the Summit, and Pakuratahi. Description: Letter from Hamuera Pakaiahi to William Colenso addressed "Ki te Kopi Kia te Koreneho Minita", dated "Okotopa 17 1847" writing from Hurunuiorangi in the Wairarapa. He says he cannot go to Te Kopi, as he is too busy with "mahi oranga". Also mentions the surveying of land in the Remutaka area, and that Te Aukarere was going to hunt birds. Tamati is also mentioned, saying he will take food to the Pākehā. Description: Photographs, probably taken by G W Barltrop. Scenes in the first part of the album are of the South Island, mostly around the Dunedin area, and further south, in Invercargill and Bluff. There are two panoramas, one of Port Chalmers and one of Lumsden. Most are landscapes, but a few show groups of people, including five young girls in the Dunedin Botanical Gardens, and a man driving a horse and buggy at Manuka Creek, with two young women sitting beside him, and a third woman standing by the horse's head. A graveyard scene is a close-up view of two headstones, one for Catherine Louisa Schaw (widow of John S Schaw), who died in 1874 aged 71. North Island scenes show a church at Levin; and views of the countryside, a bullock pulling a laden cart, and at the Rimutaka Summit all taken on a train journey. Group portraits include one of a large family group, with two young boys in the foreground with a cricket bat and cricket pads; and two large groups of men and women associated with the Missions to Seamen. One image show a plaque erected `In memory of twelve officers and seamen who were drowned or died from exposure, by the wreck of the Barque Lizzie Bell near the Oeo River, July 24 1901, erected by members and friends of the Missions to seamen, Wellington, New Zealand'.
