Murdoch, Sharon Gay, 1960- :In Womens' Suffrage Week, NZ, 2013. 20 September 2013

Date: 2013

From: Murdoch, Sharon Gay, 1960-: Digital cartoons published in The Press, Sunday Star Times, Dominion Post, and other publications

By: Murdoch, Sharon Gay, 1960-

Reference: DCDL-0026240

Description: A be-wigged judge in his full robes states "I believe it was the foolishness of the victims venturing out alone at night, dressed as they were that led the jury to acquit the man on two indecent assault charges". In the background two sinister men approach him. One says "Hey, let's roll that silly old git in the frock and the funny wig!" Cartoon inspired by a number of New Zealand court cases, and a specific case in Auckland, where defendants accused of rape claimed that the victim dressed provocatively and had taken 'risky' behaviour by walking alone at night. The wider context refers to the public discussions around 'victim shaming' and 'victim blaming'. Accompanying note from cartoonist states: 'Women's suffrage week and Justice Priestley explains jury's acquittal of man on indecent assault on two young women. Didn't run in any paper.' Murdoch, Sharon Gay, 1960- :The trouble with young girls is... 9 November 2013

Date: 2013

From: Murdoch, Sharon Gay, 1960-: Digital cartoons published in The Press, Sunday Star Times, Dominion Post, and other publications

By: Dominion post (Newspaper); Waikato Times (Newspaper); Murdoch, Sharon Gay, 1960-

Reference: DCDL-0026785

Description: Under the caption 'The trouble with young girls is... / a few expert opinions,' the cartoonist presents a variety of male perspectives on the rape of young girls by members of the Roast Busters gang in Auckland. The cartoon critiques perspectives that place the blame on the girls themselves, rather than on their rapists. In one panel, two men say, "They drink to much!" while having another round themselves. In the second panel, radio broadcaster John Tamihere says, "They call a bit of mischeif 'rape'", and his co-host Willie Jackson replies, "Yep J.T. and then they all start saying it". In a third panel, two members of the Roast Busters gang ask for the question to be repeated, and one tries to get a photo of himself. In the final panel of the cartoon, two police officers discuss the case. One says, "They don't come forward with complaints, do they Supt?" and the other replies, "Well, four did sir, but remember, we didn't like the way they were dressed." Cartoon references the Roast Busters gang in West Auckland, who maintained a Facebook page where they boasted of having sex with intoxicated underage girls, some as young as thirteen. Although official complaints were made, and police eventually identified 35 men of interest between the ages of 17 and 25, no formal charges were laid against the assailants. Radio Live hosts Willie Jackson and John Tamihere were stood down in November 2013 following on air comments in which they questioned the habits and dress of a friend of an alleged survivor of rape.
