Constuction on the incline began in 1879. The engineers who designed it were Young Brothers of Westport. Its purpose was to transport coal from Denniston to the rail head at Conns Creek Yards at the base of the incline (info from "Denniston Then and Now," Les Wright, Friends of the Hill, 1998)
Denniston Incline
The Denniston incline and its technology
Date: ca1905
From: Humphreys, W :Photographs of the Westport Coal Company's operation at Denniston
Reference: PA1-o-990
Description: The images begin at the foot of the incline where the coal trucks joined the railway head at Conns Creek Yards. There are views up the incline and down it from the top, and two views of the breakhead which was the top terminal of the incline at Denniston. The album then has views of the trucks coming and going along the double cable roperoad railway which brought loaded trucks from the mines near Burnetts Face to the breakhead, and returned the empties for refilling. Some of these views include the industrial buildings and bridges crossed by the railway, including wooden bridge and a steel trestle bridge. There is also an image of the iron bridge which crossed the Waimangaroa River and took the coal trucks to the Iron Bridge mine. One image shows a compressor engine which pumped air into the mines, another is a close up of a cascade fan used for ventalating mines. The final image is of Burnetts Face, which was the other community associated with the Westport Coal Company's opperation at this time Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).
Denniston, the incline, and Burnett's Face
Date: [ca 1905]
From: Humphreys, W :Photographs of the Westport Coal Company's operation at Denniston
Reference: PA1-o-991
Description: The album opens with a photograph of a locomotive used in shunting coal trucks. This is followed by three images of Denniston incline seen from a distance, a view of Conns Creek Yards and another of the breakhead which was the top incline terminal at Denniston. There are images of the double cable roperoad railway crossing an iron trestle bridge with coal trucks on their way to and from the mines to the incline. The album also contains three images of a model of the iron trestle bridge constructed for the Westport Coal Company. One section of the album contains seven images of the Township of Denniston. There are views of the town seen from a distance on the edge of the plateau. Other views show the the basic rather primitive character of the place - many simple weatherboard cottages without gardens or fences among the ruined stumps of native trees in a town with few formed streets. Two other images are of Burnett's Face and industrial buildings at wooden bridge Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).
