Description: Speech is comprised of the 34 speech cards Baxter used in his presentation. The talk centres on the role of training to become a teacher but diverges into religion, politics, poetry, advertising, the middle classes, Maori customs and stories. Baxter uses personal anecdotes to highlight his points and briefly touches on his settlement at Jerusalem on the Wanganui River. Also included with the speech notes is a letter from Pat Whitwell describing the circumstances in which the speech notes were acquired and a personal commentary on Baxter. Baxter gave the speech cards used in this talk to Whitwell. These cards have been photocopied and donated to the Library. This speech was presented by Baxter to students at the Palmerston North Teachers College. This manuscript is a photocopy of the typed speech cards Baxter used in his talk. Description: Collection comprises albums, loose prints, negative strips, and proof sheets which chiefly relate to the staff and work of the Curriculum Development Unit/Division of the Department of Education. Collected by those who worked at the unit in Wellington. Photographs taken circa 1960s to circa 1989 by unidentified photographer(s). Some images taken circa 1990s and circa 2000 during Unit reunions. Some (possibly many) taken by Frank Mahoney who worked as a photographer for the Department of Education, and by former staff members. Some photographs have captions, many of which are comic annotations intended for display. Images are chiefly informal views of gatherings and parties, including farewells, held in the workplace or in private homes. Includes many (mostly unidentified) portraits of members of the Unit. Also includes images which were probably taken for publication or display as part of the work of the Curriculum Development Unit/Division, the Visual Production Unit, and the School Publications Branch. These are chiefly negatives and proof sheets. Images show classroom activities in music, Maori studies, science, reading, and art; pupils and teacher trainees at Kelburn Normal School circa early 1960s; and the Careers in the Public Service 1968-1969 recruitment campaign. Other negative format images show the Unit/Division staff practising waiata, an in-service training day for teachers, social gatherings, and a powhiri at Hamilton Teachers College. Further negatives show the work of the Visual Production Unit, in particular the 'Education 100 years 1877-1977' exhibition in a school hall to mark the centennial of the Education Act.
