Description: Folder contains letters written by John and Mary Thompson to their family in Ireland. Topics covered relate mainly to family life, including the birth of the twins, and matters relating to the establishment of the store. Final letters cover the death of Mary, and John's decision to take his daughters back to Ireland to be brought up by family members in Dublin. John Thompson emigrated to Australia with his wife Mary (nee Dignan) and first child (Maria) in 1855. He set up a store for the goldfields at Kangaroo Flat near Bendigo, Victoria. Twins were born in 1856 (Margaret and George), but George died aged 9 months. Three years later Mary died of dysentry, and John sold up his business and returned to Ireland with his two daughters.
