Description: Shows a full length portrait of a man with wrap-around skirt, and necklace of long curved teeth or leaves. Over his right shouder he holds a large club with curved (bladed?) edges. Other warriors stand in a group at the right, and there is a boat in the water at the left. Plate 206 in Domeny de Rienzi's book. In the French edition, Danvin is inscribed as the copyist, and Truch as the engraver. Previous published image appears in J S C Dumont d'Urville's "Voyage de ... l'Astrolabe ..." Description: Upper view: Two-storied wooden house surrounded with plaited fibre fences. A man is cutting logs with an axe in the left foreground, while a male missionary reads, probably from the Bible to a Tongan man, woman and child on the right. There is another Tongan seated on the ground near the house and another carrying a load towards the house's front door. Lower view: A river in the foreground with a canoe. A Tongan woman is stepping into the water behind the canoe. Beyond her are trees and a plaited fibre fence with a large two-storied European-style house in the background. Plate 160 from an unknown Swedish publication, probably a missionary journal. The upper image is redrawn from the engraving by Sainson, in Vol 1, opp. p.59, Plate 7, the lower from Vol 2, opposite p.70, plate 9 in Voyage pittoresque autour du monde by J. S. C. Dumont d'Urville (Paris, 1834-5). The Swedish language version of Voyage Pittoresque ... (held by the Library at 910.4 /P/DUM) is duodecimo size and has no illustrations. It was published between 1836 and 1840. Description: Shows an outdoor meeting with male figures seated in a circle around two protagonists; one of these two (the 'King') sits crosslegged with a low half-unrolled woven screen behind him, and the other prostrates himself at the knees of the king. In the background are dwellings, palm trees and mountains. This engraving copies an engraving from an original drawing by Webber, showing similar figures but in an interior setting, with beam and rafter construction above all the participants. Plate 18 in Domeny de Rienzi's book. French edition (1835-36), has same plate and has the additional information that Danvin was the copyist for this plate, and Montaut was the engraver. Description: Full-length portrait of Attago, a Tongan chief. He is shown draped in cloth, a large curved nail in his raised right hand above his head, stepping up onto a bank, with a dwelling and a palm tree behind him to the right. The little finger on his right hand has the top joint missing. The large curved nail placed on the subject's head was a sign of appreciation. The chopped off little finger was a sign of mourning in Tonga society. The upper part of the body is derived from the engraving by Sherwin after Hodges in Cook, James. A voyage towards the South Pole ... London, 1777, Vol. I, pl. 40. However the complete picture with the full body, the drapery, dwelling and palm, and the stance, appear in a drawing in the Library by Francesco Galimberti, titled Otago chef de l'Isle d'Amsterdam dans la mer Pacifique du sud (reference number E-215-q-001) Language - Armenian Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - K'ik'megk. There are photographs of the scenic side of Tonga, places, geology, and geography. Tourists and the tourist experience of Tonga are also recorded. At some time between 1984 and 2000 all the prints relating to Tonga were returned to Ernest Crane. Wendy Crane returned these when she donated negatives in February 2000. Description: Shows a rowboat at the left, full of fighting Tongans and Europeans, with the Tongans triumphant. A row of Tongans pulls the boat ashore by rope, and other groups lead off captives or simply watch from the shore on the right. Purported to show an incident with the crew of the "Astrolabe" in 1827, but the image is based on the painting by Hodges made in 1775-6. Plate 212 in Domeny de Rienzi's book. In the French edition, Danvin is inscribed as the copyist. Similar image appears in Dumont d'Urville's "Voyage pittoresque autour du monde". Description: The Tongan chief Otago, a garment draped over his right shoulder, his right hand raised with a large nail, which he is placing on his head, a sign of appreciation. His little finger is chopped off, a sign of mourning in early Tongan society Title from engraving of same subject by J K Sherwin after drawing by W Hodges, published in: Cook, J. A voyage towards the South Pole... London 1777. Plate 40 Sotheby's catalogue suggests that this and A-111-023 may be studies for engravings, based on Hodges' original sketches. However they may also be based on the engravings by Sherwin, done from Hodges' drawings, since they bear little resemblance to Hodges known original drawings. Hodges' drawing for 'Otago' is in the Mitchell Library (Joppien Smith number 2. 75) and shows the chief without clothing and facing in the opposite direction. Watermarked: J. W. WHATMAN The artist may be Isaac Johnson, mentioned as an antiquarian artist of the late eighteenth century in Benezit's Dictionnaire des Peintres.
