Turuturu Mokai Pā

Turuturumokai Pā

Site of a pah associated with the Taranaki land wars. Site of pre-European pa, mid-1500s, and nearby a European redoubt built in 1866 by 18th Royal Irish Regiment during Taranaki Campaigns of NZ Wars. Redoubt was attacked by small group of Maori on 12 July 1868. Now an historical site about two miles from the center of Hawera. Sometimes spelled Turuturu-moki or Turuturumokai.

Description: James Cowan's notebook containing notes relating to interviews he conducted in Taranaki in 1904. Also includes some loose papers that were laid in to the notebook, which includes clippings and research notes, dated ca 1931-1934. The notebook contains information on many Taranaki place names and history relating to various pā, and the New Zealand Wars of the 1860s which took place in Taranaki. It includes waiata and karakia. Some of the notes are written in shorthand. The interviewees include: John G Beamish of Patea who spoke of the Turuturumokai battle; Ngahina of Taiporohenui who spoke of Te Whiti and a block of greenstone; and Tauke of Hokorima. The loose papers include "Turi's paddling chant" relating to the Aotea waka. Title supplied by Library. Quantity: 1 folder(s).
