Description: Photographs showing people, buildings and activities associated with Pallo Engineering Limited, Wellington, 1930s-1964. The collection includes views of the factory in Courtenay Place, staff picnics at Maidstone Park, a staff dance, and company dinners at the Royal Oak hotel and Orsini's restaurant. Photographers include William Hall Raine. Pallo Engineering Limited was established in January by Karl Pallo (1896-1986) with premises in Courtenay Place, Wellington. They intiially produced petrol pumps and associated equipment. During World War 2 they produced munitions, and after the war they produced washing-machines. In 1962 Karl Pallo sold his business to Sunbeam New Zealand. Ken Hawker served an apprenticeship with Pallo Engineering Limited 1939-1944. Description: A strange old man who lived in an ancient hut in a bit of scrub at the back of Maidstone Park, Upper Hutt, when virtually all the Hutt Valley was open country, and was known as old Greeko, is the theme of this story by John McCaw. Old Greeko (not of Greek origin) frequented the roads doing odd jobs, and made a poor living from making candles.
