Description: Cadastral map with topographical features of an area in the Wairarapa, bordered on the left side of the map by the Waipoua River, and the Tauheru [Tauweru] River on the right side of the map. Other rivers shown are the Ruamauhanga, Kopuaranga, and Wangaehu. Other areas identified are the Masterton Small Farm Reserve, Masterton township, Manaia [Block] and Native Reserve. Property holdings showing acreage size and surnames are also identified. The names are Wallace, J.H. and R.D.Wallace, R.E.Pemberton, Fairweather, Pemberton, Welch, Campbell, J. and H.Campbell, W.Welch, Paul, R.Cottins, W.Dorset, Toomath, W.Bowter, W.R.Smith, A.Cruyne, H.Cruyne, Dagge, Woodcroffe, Smith, J.T.Ball, and R Collins at Te Ori Ori [Te Ore Ore]. Red lines cross the map, particularly the area between the Waipoua and Ruamahanga Rivers, and pass through small triangular shapes suggesting measurement points. Two of these are named Tirohanga and Matapihi. Maori names transcribed as per the spelling on the item, suggesting places or streams are, Kuangawariwari Plain, Kiripuni [stream], Makoura [stream], Te Whanga, Waioterangiaka-aka, Waipawa [stream], Mangamutu [stream], Kaununga, M.Topetopeto, Te Purapura, Mangarangikaukino, Waiohanga, Ruariki, Kaikurangai, Mangarei, Waipapa, Waiohanga,and Wai-ote-kai. Iorns album

Description: A pocket inside the front cover of this album contains 23 loose photographs of landscapes in New Zealand, many of them Government Publicity Photos. In the South Island various views show Milford and the Milford Track, Tasman Glacier, Mount Cook, and the Buller Gorge. In the North Island there are several views of a group of fallow deer near Featherston; two of geysers at Whakarewarewa; and two of caves in the Waitomo Cave system, showing the underground river in the Aranui Cave, and stalactites in the Ruakuri cave. The main body of the album contains older photographs, circa 1890s, of townscapes in the Wairarapa. Two scenes show groups of Maori performers, one of a posed group of men and women, some holding taiaha and mere; the other of a group of young girls dancing on a podium. Description: Photographs taken by Henry Wright in the Wellington Region between about 1879 and 1899. In the album there is one photograph (p 33), of the Pink Terraces which was possibly taken by the Burton brothers. They include two photographs (on p 1, 36) of his wife (probably his second wife Mary Jane (nee Woolman), as it is likely they were taken between 1886 and 1890, dated from the style of her dress, and he didn't marry his third wife, Elizabeth Hughes Hallett, until 1907) Many were taken around the Wellington coast, including views of the Wellington Heads; two views of Maori whare at Karaka Bay (circa 1879)(p 13) and one with a Maori chief in front of a whare (p 15); and three photographs of a bay near Karaka Bay showing torpedo sheds (p 20), a naval camp (p 30), and the explosion of a torpedo in the sea (p 31). Description: Album of photographs, engravings and etchings. Frontispiece is a portrait of Gideon Algernon Mantell, painted by J J Masquerier, engraved by Samuel Stepney. On page 30 is `The country of the iguanadon, restored by John Martin ... from the geological discoveries of Gideon Mantell'; page 29 there is a photo of ink drawing of Brighton by A. Devis (Probably English landscape artist Anthony Devis). Page 42 has a photographic copy of a pen & wash drawing by architect William Clayton of Government House in Wellington, ca 1869. It bears little resemblance to the completed building (copy negative available at 1/2-C-021641). Many of the New Zealand scenes are unidentified, though one group were taken in Queen Charlotte Sound, and Picton. Most are taken by unidentified photographers, though there are tourist scenes of Pipiriki and Jerusalem taken by James Valentine, and some of Te Aroha by Frederick George Radcliffe. A collection of 6 etchings by Wilfrid Williams Ball are all related to the Thames in London, including views of the Tower of London, Gravesend, and Greenwich. An early photograph of Mrs Alfred J Woodhouse (mother-in-law of Gideon Mantell), was taken by an unidentified photographer in 1839.
