Left Port Chalmers 2 May 1918, called at Wellington (3-9 May 1918), Balboa (28 May 1918), Panama Canal and Colon (29-30 May 1918), Norfolk VA (4-10 June 1918), New York (11-12 June 1918), arrived Liverpool 24 July 1918. Three Transatlantic crossings between Liverpool, Glasgow, and New York, August-November 1918. Liverpool, England, to Port Chalmers, with returned New Zealand soldiers. Left Liverpool 2 December 1918, called at Colon (18-19 December 1918), Panama Canal and Balboa (19 December 1918), Auckland (9 January 1919), Wellington (11-15 January 1919), arrived Port Chalmers 16 January 1919. Includes views of Panama Canal locks and gates, ferries at Norfolk VA, United States and British warships, soldiers playing two-up on the ship returning home, and ferries in Auckland Harbour. Liverpool, England, to Port Chalmers. Left Liverpool 3 February 1918, called at Colon (20-21 February 1918, Panama Canal and Balboa (21 February 1918), Auckland (15-16 March 1918) Wellington (18-28 March 1918), arrived Port Chalmers 29 March 1918. Includes views of Manawatu Gorge, Paekakariki railway line, locks on Panama Canal, Colon, Newport News, damage caused by Halifax Explosion of 6 December 1917, Auckland Harbour, Dunedin, and ships Mount Vernon, Imo (damaged in Halifax Explosion), Leviathan, HMCS Niobe and yacht Viking. Description: Panoramic group photograph of New Zealand soldiers, including Major Robert Cade [centre back, to left of man standing in covered porch?] of the 2nd Battalion of the Wellington Regiment, outside a YMCA building, Newport News, Virginia, United States, during his return to New Zealand after World War I. The group includes unidentified women and a civilian man holding a large sign reading "To-night: See the Big MOVIE SHOW. 10 reels 7.30". Other partially obscured signs and banners welcome troops home. Taken 25 Sep 1919 by White's Studio. Source of information - Donor identified J R Cade Inscriptions: Photographer's title on negative - bottom right - "Diggers" at YMCA Hut, Newport News, Va, USA, Sept-25 1919. Description: Comprises summary of letters and diary and transcription of letters in the form of a diary (to Dec 1916) and diary (Dec 1916-4 Sep 1917); Grey describes her voyage to England, beginning with the ship's arrival at Panama, her arrival in England, her work at No 3 New Zealand Hospital at Codford, at No 1 New Zealand Hospital at Amiens which was moved to Hazebrouck, their evacuation to a monastery at St Omer and part of a sightseeing tour of Scotland, probably before returning to France.
