Description: Photograph album containing views of the South Island, including Christchurch, Diamond Lake, Otira Gorge, Bluff, Skippers Gorge, Waiau River and Hanmer. North Island views include views of Mount Tarawera after the eruption in June 1886, and views of the Pink and White Terraces before they were destroyed in the eruption. Other views show Napier, showing the first ship to berth at the new breakwater, SS Flora, on 22nd October 1895; Marine Parade in Napier; street views in Gisborne and Whangarei; Parihaka; and the Rotorua, Wairakei area with the Huka Falls, Aratiatia Rapids, and the Waimangu Geyser. Photographs taken circa 1890s, by some unidentified photographers, but many by named photographers, including Arthur James Iles (Thames), E Wheeler & Son (Christchurch), Hawley & Co (Napier). The album opens with views taken on a trip to the West Coast in January 1954; followed by a West Coast museum trip, February 1940; a Neslson-Westhaven expedition, November 1952; John and Pam Salmon's honeymoon in the South Island in December 1948; and a trip to Mt. Algidus, February 1946. The next trips in the album were the Mt. Arthur tableland museum expedition, February 1946, and again in February 1948; the Bold Peak district, February 1943; trip around the Sounds on "The Alert", August 1948; air trip over the Sounds in April 1949; and then the South Pacific Science Congress, Auckland-Christchurch, February 1949. Description: Unused envelope showing an illustration in dark blue ink, of Te Aroha's mineral springs, bath houses and domain, and a circular vignette "On the Waihou River" showing a canopied boat carrying passengers on the river. Cabbage trees and tree ferns feature in these illustrations. The back of the envelope shows a circular illustration of a map of New Zealand, inside a border with the words "Peace on Earth, Goodwill toward men". Publication date suggested by vendor. Description: Photographs, chiefly taken by Albert Percy Godber, including family portraits, areas where he lived, Petone and the Petone Fire Brigade, railways, the Hutt Valley, Wellington, and areas in the upper North Island. The family photographs show his immediate family (his wife Laura (nee Zinckgraf), and children William Albert and Phyllis Mary); groups including his father and mother Charles and Mary Ann Godber, his brother Harry Leonard and wife Annie and their daughter Constance Alice, and Laura's brother Charles Albert Zinckgraf. Godber was a fireman with the Petone Fire Brigade, and there are photographs of groups of firemen and fire fighting equipment, and displays of methods of fire fighting. Associated with Godber's work with New Zealand Railways, and particularly at the Petone Railway Workshops, there are views of various workshop buildings, groups of railway workers; one of M J Mack (General Secretary of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants of New Zealand); images of damage to rolling stock after railway accidents; trains; the Raurimu Spiral; railway viaducts; logging railways; and railway stations. Photographs taken in the northern part of the North Island include coal mines, rock formations, hot springs at Te Aroha and Kamo; Whangarei and the Wairua Falls; suburbs of Auckland including Newmarket, Remuera, Parnell, Onehunga, and Ellerslie Race Course.
