Te Kohanga

Anglican Church Missionary station established here in 1853 by missionary Revd. Robert Maunsell. One of the largest and most productive in Waikato with extensive market gardens (Wises NZ Guide). Called 'Kohanga' on some maps. 9 miles upstream from Maraetahi mission station, 17 km upstream from the Waikato River mouth, Raglan County, Waikato Heads. Continued until mid 1860s.

Description: The journal begins in March 1858 and ends in November 1858. A note, 24 years later, describes her revisit to Kohanga and gives a brief historical summary. The journal describes life in Auckland, a voyage to Tauranga on the cutter `Hope', and visits to mission stations there and at Maketu, a trip through the thermal area and back to Auckland through Thames, the Waikato and Taupiri. Eliza Jones describes Maori life and conditions, flora and fauna as well as many of the people she met on her journey, including Archeacon Brown, Rev Volkner, John Kinder and Thomas Chapman, whose poem `The rats' lament', about the Maketu rats, is given in full. Shows Kohanga [Anglican] Mission Station, school, site for church, Te Kohanga landing place, Tikirahi landing place, and Kakenga Pa beside large green bush. Depicts surveyed cadastral land, lot number 2 and 3, granted to the Bishop of New Zealand of over 470 acres, of which 144 are swamp, for a school. Right bottom corner of map reads (unsigned): This is not a land claim, 18.10.67. Bottom right hand corner reads: Surveyed by P.?. Hagan, 7th Dec, 1853.
