Description: Postcards from the 1910s, with one of the ship RMS Ormonde at the beginning. Most of the views are taken in Britain and Europe, with a few of Australia (inserted in an envelope in a pocket inside front cover, and at the end of the album), and one of the Invercargill water tower and water works (p 046). The British postcards are all tourist views of landscapes, university colleges (Cambridge), churches and other historical buildings, including Hampton Court Palace. Many of the European postcards are again of historical buildings and landscapes, but one sequence shows scenes of war damage in Belgium (pages 058-076). Many of the views show the environment before the first World War, with the same view at the end of the war. Examples of these are at Dixmunde [i.e. Diksmuide, or Dixmude], Ypres, and Ostende [i.e. Oostende]. Quantity: 1 album(s). Description: Album of photographs interpersed with coloured, and black & white postcards, newspaper cuttings and other ephemera. The photographs relate to an area shown in many of Gerald Rainsford Craddock's albums at Tauraroa; to outings by boy scouts; and to various sites in Egypt and the Far East during World War II. These include an image of a bridge of boats at Baghdad, and photographs taken on an air armada from Egypt to the Far East in January 1942. A few coloured photographs are taken at the Blue Baths in Rotorua in 1965. The postcards are taken by various photographers including Muir and Mooodie (Dunedin, New Zealand), David James Aldersley (Wellington), and P W Fallaise (Sydney). Description: Interview with Barry O'Neil, born in Feilding in 1956. Talks about growing up on farms near Feilding and Te Puke, and studying veterinary science at Massey University, graduating in 1978. Mentions working in a veterinary practice in the Bay of Plenty, then travelling through Asia, and working in the United Kingdom for two years, becoming interested in exotic diseases. Comments on working in a practice in Tauranga when he returned until he joined the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF) in 1984. Describes his job as MAF veterinarian at the port of Tauranga, inspecting animals before they were loaded onto ships, and having responsibility for disease control. Mentions trips to the United States to accompany horses coming to New Zealand. Refers to going to work in Wellington in 1989, and being appointed as New Zealand Veterinary Counsellor in Brussels in 1991. Talks about this role, his responsibility for Africa and the Middle East as well as the European Union (EU), and the impact of EU directives on New Zealand trade. Recalls his involvement in GATT (General Agreement on Tarrifs and Trade) negotiations and the Sanitary and Phytosanitary Agreement under the World Trade Organisation. Comments on his involvement with the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE, International Office of Epizootics), its role in setting international standards for trade in animals and animal products, and New Zealand dependence on trade agreements made through OIE. Talks about returning to New Zealand and being chief veterinary officer in MAF 1994-1999. Comments on concerns with BSE [bovine spongioform encephalopathy], rabbbit calicivirus and fruit fly infestations during this period and how they have affected the way biosecurity is managed. Recalls the introduction of infringement notices and instant fines. Backgrounds the making of the television series Border Patrol. Comments on the introduction of x-ray machines and detector dogs at the border. Refers to working with Customs when non-biosecurity risks are found with x-rays. Discusses the Biosecurity Act 1993 and how it is working. Refers to the appointment of a Minister of Biosecurity in 1999, the establishment of the Biosecurity Council, and the lack of investment in raising public awareness at the time. Comments on the division of MAF's regulatory authority into two groups, biosecurity and food regulatory, in 1999, and being appointed Group Director of the Biosecurity Authority. Comments on the establishment of Biosecurity New Zealand in 2005 and its roles and accountability with regard to pest management being clarified. Explains the thinking behind the merger of MAF Quarantine Service and Biosecurity New Zealand in 2007 to form MAF Biosecurity New Zealand, and becoming deputy director. Mentions the relationship between Biosecurity New Zealand and the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service, and the assistance provided to Pacific nations for biosecurity and border control. Description: Photograph album compiled by Alexander Gillies, circa 1923-1925. Material relates to the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley Stadium, sightseeing in London, and a “Medical Tour” throughout continental Europe. Most prints include captions that identify locations or individuals. Some prints have been removed from album. Approximately 35 prints relate to the British Empire Exhibition, 1924-1925. Images show the exterior of Wembley Stadium, a man-made canal, brass bands, and views of exhibition pavilions (India, Burma, Palestine, East Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, British Malaya, and the Canadian Pacific). Other images show members of the British and Italian royal families visiting the exhibition, including King George V leaving in a carriage. Other British royalty photographed at the exhibition are Queen Mary, Prince Henry, the Duchess of York (Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon), the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire (Victor and Evelyn Cavendish), and Prince Arthur of Connaught. Photographs of Italian royalty show the King and Queen of Italy (Victor Emmanuel III and Elena of Montenegro). Material related to sightseeing in London includes three sets of tourist photographs showing famous sites and buildings around London. Other commercially produced photographs show “The King’s State Coach” and preparations for a court procession in the Royal Mews. Also contains one printed postcard advertising “Ye Olde George Inn, Southwark". Approximately 55 prints relate to a “Medical Tour arranged by Students International Union July - August 1925”. Images show medical equipment, hospitals and infirmaries in Leiden, Vienna, and Paris, as well as patients receiving treatments, including an “appendectomy under local anaesthetic” and “tuberculous children living on roof of hospital”. Other images show well-known buildings, sites, statues, and views of the places Gillies visited. These include: Leiden (Town Hall, geese, river and windmills); Potsdam (Sanssouci Park, the Orangery Palace, the New Palace); Berlin (Charlottenburg Gate, Brandenburg Gate, Berlin Cathedral); Vienna (Rathaus, the Danube, museums and art galleries); Prague (public gardens); Paris (the Louvre, Versailles, Stade Pershing, "Statue to the Triumph of Medicine over Disease", "Grave of the Unknown Warrior"); Brussels (the Danube, Town Hall, Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula); Zurich (the Limmat); and Amsterdam (canals, Basilica of Saint Nicholas). Portraits of identified individuals include “Professor Barge, Leiden” and “Mrs Zoe Ashurst [Cawdry?] Club 20 Cavendish Square”. Other photographs of people show a sleeping toddler “left at the door of a public house while Mother gets a drink”, people queuing to see “Dr Fosdick at the City Temple” in London, and “street singers”.
