Name found in album compiled in 1881. Confirmed from card in Anderson's place names index, Alexander Turnbull library. Index card states that it is a small lake near the head of Lake Wakatipu.

Description: Shows various sketches centred around lake scenes. "In Kinloch Bush" is from the sketch at A-186-045. Two show variant views of 'Mt Cecil'. One is 'Rere Lake from a photograph by Mr Jas Richardson'. The untitled lithograph of four views, including a man on a mountain track on horseback has a matching ink original at E-038-q-2-020. Description: Scenic photographs of the Southern Alps in the Southland District taken circa 1900s to 1920s by various unidentified photographers. From names pencilled on the backs of photographs possible photographers include the Rev. William Bower Black (no. 2-3, 35, 40-43, 46-47, 49, 51, 61, 67, 90 and 92), J J Kinsey (nos. 19, 20) and Edgar Williams (no. 3, with no. 118 showing a mounted portrait of Williams inscribed "Sincerely yours, Edgar Williams"). Two other names are shown on the backs of photographs, Tomlinson (Pho, no. 116), and R Sanders (nos. 114 and 115). Most of the locations are identified, and include views from various vantage points including from the Barrier Range, Grove's Pass, Key Summit, Talbots Ladder, the Gertrude Saddle, the Grave-Talbot Pass, and from near the Homer Hut. Most of the specific places identified are listed in the place headings above. Description: Photographs of areas in the South Island taken by various identified and unidentified photographers, with several taken by "Guy" (i.e. Guy Clayton Morris). Photographs include a very clear image of the interior of a mountain hut (no. 04) showing two unidentified men, one lying on an upper bunk and the other seated on a box under the window, cooking and kitchen equipment and a metal-bound soda siphon. There are two interior photographs of the Hermitage, one showing the closed-in verandah, and the other showing the dining room. Others of interest are an early view of the first Lower Greenstone Huts, and one which is possibly of the early days of William Batson's accomodation house. Description: Album of scenic views of New Zealand, many taken by Thomas Pringle, others taken by photographers from the New Zealand Tourist Department, and others by unidentified photographers. A number are hand-coloured. South Island scenes include Milford Sound, lake and mountain views, and some of Christchurch city. North island scenes include a number in Wellington, with views of city streets, the Chief Post Office, Government Buildings, St John's Church and the railway station. Most of the other North Island views are of tourist destinations, particularly in the thermal regions, with hot springs, geysers and mud pools. There are a large number relating to Maori, especially at Whakarewarewa, with taniko weaving, flax weaving, poi dancers, te hongi, and posed portraits of young girls in front of a meeting house wearing different styles of cloaks. Description: Album of photographs, engravings and etchings. Frontispiece is a portrait of Gideon Algernon Mantell, painted by J J Masquerier, engraved by Samuel Stepney. On page 30 is `The country of the iguanadon, restored by John Martin ... from the geological discoveries of Gideon Mantell'; page 29 there is a photo of ink drawing of Brighton by A. Devis (Probably English landscape artist Anthony Devis). Page 42 has a photographic copy of a pen & wash drawing by architect William Clayton of Government House in Wellington, ca 1869. It bears little resemblance to the completed building (copy negative available at 1/2-C-021641). Many of the New Zealand scenes are unidentified, though one group were taken in Queen Charlotte Sound, and Picton. Most are taken by unidentified photographers, though there are tourist scenes of Pipiriki and Jerusalem taken by James Valentine, and some of Te Aroha by Frederick George Radcliffe. A collection of 6 etchings by Wilfrid Williams Ball are all related to the Thames in London, including views of the Tower of London, Gravesend, and Greenwich. An early photograph of Mrs Alfred J Woodhouse (mother-in-law of Gideon Mantell), was taken by an unidentified photographer in 1839.
