The house is above the area of Port Nelson with Haulashore Island in the centre and the Boulder Bank running along the centre right. A path leads up to the house left centre, with lawn on the right and a wide garden on the left. The house is partly hidden by trees, has a large wisteria growing up verandah posts by the front entrance on the left, and there are rounded bays to the right of the entrance. Description: Watercolour by an unidentified hand, possibly after Charles Heaphy's lithograph View of Nelson Haven, 1841, published 1842. View from the first ridge above the beach showing tents erected to house the first settlers to Nelson (although one in the foreground appears to be house- or whare-like). The view looks from the land towards the Boulder Bank and Haulashore Island, and the Arrow or Fifeshire rock across Tasman Bay to the distant Moutere Hills. Five Maori stand or squat in the foreground. Trees frame the view on either side. Five ships are anchored in the harbour, which probably include the Will Watch,the Whitby and the Arrow. Description: A view of Nelson Harbour from the hills above, and possibly from where William Fox was living. The Boulder Bank and Haulashore Island are visible, with snow-capped mountains in the distance. A two-masted ship and two waka can be seen in Nelson Haven, as well as two other vessels out in Tasman Bay. There are figures unloading barrels on the shore, and two houses in the foreground on the left Accompanied by a photocopied letter, originally adhered to the back of the painting, from Dawn Smith of the Nelson Provincial Library, dated 1982. Description: View from the first ridge above the beach showing a prefabricated barracks to the left and the tents erected to house the first settlers to Nelson, a well, a flag, and several carts. The view looks from the land towards the Boulder Bank and Haulashore Island, and the Arrow or Fifeshire rock across Tasman Bay to the distant snow-capped Moutere Hills and Tasman Range. The first three immigrant ships, The Will Watch, the Whitby and the Arrow are shown in the harbour with flags flying. There are clumps of trees at the water's edge, but the land is otherwise grassed or with flax and bracken. Original watercolour for the related lithograph "View of Nelson Haven in Tasman's Gulf, New Zealand, including a part of the site of the Town of Nelson" published in 1842. Exhibited in 'Treasures in Trust' exhibition to celebrate 75th anniversary of the Alexander Turnbull Library in 1995. Exhibited: Treasures in Trust. Description: A view looking down on Haulashore Island, where there are five small buildings. There are three sailing ships, two of them within the bay inshore of the island. This pencil sketch was published in Making New Zealand, Vol. 1, no. 6 p. 23. According to a note on the work's folder, it was copied from Lowther Broad's Jubilee history of Nelson... (1892), p. 17. The view in Broad is a reproduction of a William Fox watercolour 1848, which is in the Hocken Library (previously in Bett Collection). The original watercolour shows some of the buildings on Haulashore Island appearing to be more like tents, whereas McLintock has depicted them as rectangular buildings. Quantity: 1 drawing(s).
