Description: Transcription by Colin Bassett of diary kept by Gunner James Stubbs in World War Two beginning with an account of his military service from 1940 to 1943 when the diary begins (21 Nov 1943) and finishing 1 Jun 1944, shortly before his death in Wellington 10 Jun 1944 Stubbs describes his enlistment and training from 1940 to 1943 when he left New Zealand on the `Nieuw Amsterdam', arriving in Egypt in Aug 1943; he describes the voyage, places visited, and Cairo, then sailing to Italy and serving there including Cassino. Description: Photographs taken during the New Zealand British Empire Games team's journey to Britian on the SS Remuera. Passengers, boat drill and other shipboard activities are recorded. There are pictures of the Panama Canal, and a few of Colon. Though there are photographs of athletes and one or two of the events at the Games, this album is more about socialising and the places visited while in England. Swimming pools are prety well covered including the Kingfisher's Pool in Epping Forest where the New Zealand swimmers trained, and the big new covered Empire Swimming Pool in London. Views from their London hotel, Wimbeldon, and a visit to Eton College where they were looked after by school boys in top hats and tails. While visiting Croydon Airport they took a flight over the outer suburbs of London in a multi engined air liner. They saw Windsor Castle, the trooping of the colour, and visited Chester Cathedral. Description: Six pages of sketches showing boats in a harbour (four pages are entitled "Colombo", one dated 1 May '77; and may refer to the name of the boat but probably to a port at Colombo. Flora Scales visited England and France in 1977 and may have gone by boat. One of the images is entitled "May at sea"). A page near the back lists what may be a shopping list: Easter cards, stockings, brassiere, hair grips, turps. Title and provenance from accompanying slip of yellow paper. Quantity: 1 sketchbook(s). Seddon album 1

Description: Photographs, chiefly taken by Louie J Seddon in 1897 on a trip around the world on the occasion of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897. They include several photographs on the group's return, especially one of Parliament Buildings, and five views of a reception for Mr Crow (R J Seddon's private secretary) by Ministerial Secretaries celebrating his return. Beneath the main inscription inside the first page is further information in Louie Seddon's copper-plate writing which reads "Our party consisted of my Father (the Right Hon. R J Seddon; Mother; Sister (Mary); Myself and Mr W Crow (Father's private secretary). We left Wellington, 15th April 1897, went via San Francisco - New York route to London - and returned by the overland (to Naples) and Suez Canal route, arriving Wellington, 8th Sept. 1897". En route to England a number of photographs show shipboard life, and several of the party in Samoa, one with Bishop and Mrs Wallis, and King Malietoa. In England there is one photograph cut from an English paper showing R J Seddon at Hawarden Castle with the Right Hon. Sir Wilford Laurier, Rt Hon and Lady Carrington, Rt Hon and Mrs W E Gladstone, Rt Hon G H Reid and Sir Louis Davies, July 1897. Also a sequence of views of the "Agent General's River Excursion on the Thames". The group visited various British Seddon family members at Eccleston and Bickerstaffe; and they visited Scottish writer and philosopher Thomas Carlyle's birthplace and grave. Photographs take up 32 pages with the rest blank apart from two newspaper cuttings attached to page 53. One is about Lady Freyberg at the Linen Guild (Evening Post, August 11, 1948?); the other about the ship Janie Seddon which was about to be sold (September 1946). On page 009 is a newspaper article on "King Dick" (Richard John Seddon), written in 1951 "By one who knew him" 45 years after his death. Eileen Fortune's trip to Europe

Description: Photographs taken on the sea voyage to France in 1931. These include deck scenes, views of Sydney Harbour and unidentified Australian locations, people and scenes in Colombo Sri Lanka, the Suez Canal, and Gibraltar. Other photographs record a holiday through the south of France to Italy in July 1932, and travells in France in September 1932. This included visiting Poitiers, and there is a group of postcards from that city. Other photographs show groups of people many of them young women, and most set in the countryside and on a farm or farms. One group of photographs associated with a street market show women in traditional costumes. Some of the photographs may relate to other students with whom she lived while in France, and two photographs may be of her fellow students and teachers in a class room. She also visited what looks like the International Colonial Exhibition which opened in Paris in May 1931. Quantity: 175 b&w original photographic print(s).

Description: Journal kept by Hunter while travelling from England to New Zealand on the `Rangitata' and his return to England on the `Makura' to Australia and the Orsova' from Sydney from 23 Oct 1931 to 26 Apr 1932. He travelled with Ena Hunter. He describes their preparations, embarkation at Southampton, the other passengers, food (including menus), sea sickness, entertainments, the comforts and otherwise of the ship, his cabin, their passage through the Panama Canal and Armstice Day. They disembarked at Wellington 24 Nov 1931, and left for Australia on the `Makura' 7 Mar 1932, and for England on the `Orsova' from Sydney, 13 Mar 1932. In New Zealand Hunter spent time in Wellington, visiting the Alexander Turnbull Library, describing the work of the League of Nations Union in Wellington, visits Christchurch, the West Coast and Nelson where he spent some time, Wanganui, the Waitomo Caves, Rotorua and Auckland and back through Taranaki where he climbed Mt Egmont; he visited farms and factories, observed the opening of Parliament (24 Feb 1932) and visited the Gear Freezing and Meat Preservation Company. He attended many church services in various churches including the Congregational, Church of Christ and Presbyterian churches. Folowing his and Ena's departure for Sydney he describes the new Sydney harbour bridge, their visit to Tasmania and the House of Commons in Hobart, visiting to Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Colombo, the Suez Canal, Naples and Gibraltar, and an ANZAC commemoration service he declined to attend. The journal is illustrated and includes a water colour of the `Rangitata', newspaper clippings of portraits of various New Zealanders; and a copy of a letter from the Turnbull to the donor (1986).
