Description: The papers include material relating to the Communist Party in Blackball, lecture notes from the Workers' Educational Association of Otago University on Man's place in Nature, and personal papers of Harold Davis The papers are those of the donor's father, Eric Murdoch, who was an electrician from Glasgow. He was a member of the Communist Party, and secretary of the local branch; he wrote some of the minutes. The papers of Harry Davis are separate from those of Murdoch but were collected by him. Description: Diary kept by Hall who emigrated to New Zealand in 1913 and worked on the West Coast in mines, including Blackball, and various parts of Canterbury including Christchurch, as a general labourer and handyman; includes accounts, expenses, his observations and participation in the 1913 strikes on the coast, a record of the noon weather while he was sailing, notes etc. Also two dried leaves, one with `Capetown May 16th 1913. A Hall' written on it and the other with `From Capetown May 16th 1913. To My Dear Mother from Arthur'. Information relating to the content as well as the date taken and the date printed, is on the rear of most prints. Most prints relate to the West Coast Region, but also some images of Nelson, Canterbury, and Otago regions. Identified people are: Kopara Sawmill workers Bill Brown, Owen Jacobs, Morry Pullman, Hans Van Ruyven, Jimmy Birchfield, Doug Macalister, Joe Kavanagh, Neil McLean, Archy Fluerty, saw doctor John Henry Ord, Ted McGhie; licensee of Nelson Creek Hotel D Graham; Dorothy Debenham; Mick Bowie, and chief guide at Mt Cook Hermitage. Unidentified people include a female French tourist and some children. Featured natural environments include Karamea beach scenes, mining and sawmilling sites, and Buller Gorge. Featured town sequences include Reefton and Nelson's Creek houses and businesses, many of which are derelict. Further images (and series of images) of note include: a series of images of the Kopara Sawmill with forests, exterior felling scenes, lumber yard, processing of timber, and workers; spectators at a Cobden soccer match; crib-logging on the Wataroa River; various road works and maintainence scenes; locomotive at Ngahere sawmill site; images relating to various mining activities; church buildings; municipal buildings; and some mountaineering prints.
