Description: Gives a background of the Swensson family, including details about William Swensson's Swedish born father, who drove a horse drawn `express' wagon. Talks about the early Holloway Road area and neighbouring areas of Wellington, the butts (military rifle range) on Aro Street and the Terrace Prison. Discusses shops and local businesses in the area and the school. Recalls railway routes round Wellington, over the Rimutakas and the Manawatu Railway. Talks about his father's work at the Otaki Hospital, living out there sometimes and Otaki friend Bella Bevan. Describes horse racing at Island Bay and elsewhere, horse transport and betting on horses. Recalls going to Fullers Vaudeville shows and Packapoo dens in Haining Street. Talks about his employment at the Government Printing Office from 1898 to 1930, working on the School Journal and Hansard. Describes the layout of the building and some of the work and staff in detail. Recalls the effect of being made redundant in the 1930s Depression, five years before his retirement. Describes the occupations of his brothers and sisters and his children, including daughter Maureen who worked in the greengrocery business in Holloway Road for forty years.
