He refers frequently to his family, and there are some letters to his son, Steven. Description: The papers comprise letters to members of his family (1939-1943), a diary kept while a prisoner of war (Feb-Sep 1943) and copies of `The prisoner of war' (1942-1943) Source of title - Supplied Maxwell was working as a bank clerk in Hawera when he enlisted in the army in Oct 1939. He saw service with 19 Battalion in North Africa, Greece and Crete and was captured during action in the Western Desert in Jul 1942. He was imprisoned at Camp PG 85 Tuturana, Italy. Description: Mounted photographs of: French colonial troops in an allied parade in Tunis after the campaign in North Africa; the Third Echelon farewell parade in the grounds of Parliament, Wellington; three soldiers sharing a cigarette in the desert with mosquito netting draped round the head to protect against flies; a New Zealand truck on the way to Azizia, Libya in January 1943; a New Zealand signaller helping a linesman from the Free French forces at the top of a telegraph pole; two transport ships berthed at Queen's Wharf, Wellington used to carry the First Echelon to the Middle East; a soldier leading a mule pack through the cactus used to supply front-line troops in the hills of Tunisia; an axis supply ship sunk in the port of Tripoli taken when the New Zealanders entered in January 1943; Maori infantry on the back of a truck entering Tripoli; and the road to San Marino with large white crosses painted on the hillside to mark its boundaries.
