Description: Raised redoubt in front of a cloud-ringed Mount Taranaki. Two long buildings and a flag flying are shown on top of the redoubt. A dwelling at the base of the redoubt has smoke coming from the chimney. Four figures can be seen, including a soldier with rifle in the foreground. A similar image (by S Percy Smith) was published on page 17 of Cowan's 'The adventures of Kimble Bent'. Possibly by Messenger. Description: Photographs mainly relating to von Tempsky and the New Zealand Wars, including photographs of von Tempsky's artworks, and artworks by other artists of Opunake and Sentry Hill redoubts and Bell Block Stockade. Includes a photograph of a sketch attributed to S Percy Smith of "The ruins of Ihaia's pa 'Ikamoana' after its demolition by the Puketapu Tribes. Taranaki. 1858"; a photograph of the filming of Rudall Hayward's 'Rewi's Last Stand' 1925 (original negative held in Sir George Grey Special Collections, Auckland Libraries, reference: 471-9756). Includes photographic portraits of von Tempsky (from 1866), Patara Te Tuhi, 'Maori warrior Te Tumu, Kouma' (1928), Te Huia Raureti, Kimble Bent, and Tutange Waionui (posing with a gun). A photographic negative of one of von Tempsky's paintings and manuscript material have been separated from this box of prints. See 'separated materials' for details. Title supplied by Library. Description: Mount Taranaki to the right in the middle distance with a wooden valley in the foreground with fenced clearings. The names Kahikitea and Matuitaura are no longer in use in the Taranaki area, but the Regiment was between Waitara and New Plymouth in mid-October 1864. Possibly the Sentry Hill area.
