Description: Shows naval battle scene with a galleon sinking in the foreground and men clinging to pieces of wreckage; another has been dismasted while the remaining are engaged in battle. Posiedon is shown in the lower righthand side surveying the scene being enacted before him. In 1708 Commodore Wagner with a small squadron attacked a fleet of galleons on their way from Port Bello to Carthagena. The Spanish admiral's ship the San Josef blew up with a cargo on board 700,000 pounds in gold and silver, with only seventeen men being saved [Source: How Britannia came to rule the waves by W H G Kingston (1814-1886). Description: Depicts the Battle of Malaga fought on 13 Aug 1704 during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714). Shows the naval battle with cannon balls in the air, galleons on fire, one being blown to pieces, survivors in the water (some clinging to wreckage). In the foreground there are men in rowboats, with those on the right in close combat firing at each other with guns. The British flagship is on the right. The Anglo-Dutch Commander-in-chief was Sir George Rooke and his Franco-Spanish counterpart was the Comte de Toulose (son of Louis XIV). Description: Depicts the seige of Barcelona which took place on 20 October 1705, during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714). Shows ships close to the quay firing their cannons at a large armed crowd. In the foreground men are firing on each other from rowboats. Earl of Peterborough lead English & Dutch troops in Spain. He was created sole commander of the land forces in April 1705 and joint commander with Sir Cloudesley Shovell of the fleet on 1 May. He arrived at Lisbon on 20 June 1705 and sailed for Barcelona in August 1705 on an expedition for the conquest of Catalonia and began to beseige the town. Quantity: 1 b&w art print(s).
