Description: Interview with Ronald Kite, born London, 15 May 1928. Talks about his childhood in Islington, London during the Depression, living in poverty with extended family and how this background helped him to fit into a rural Maori family. Mentions starting work when he was 14 during World War II, first in a munitions factory and later going to sea in the merchant service. Talks about coming to New Zealand in 1952 and staying, although he went back to sea later because he could not settle ashore. Refers to meeting his wife Waiheke Heta (Te Aupouri) who had grown up in Te Kao (Northland) in poverty in a large family, and had not learnt English until she went to school. Comments that she married early but left her abusive husband after having two children. Mentions they met at the hotel where Waiheke was working and moved in to her sister-in-law's house in New Lynn when Waiheke was pregnant. Refers to the fact that this was at the time when Maori migration to the cities was increasing. Discusses the fraught relationship he had with his wife's family although he got on well with her iwi. Describes allowing his children to be baptised in the Ratana church of their mother. Mentions his wife was buried at Te Kao after she was killed in an accident, and the family said he would be buried next to her. Mentions he picked up Te Reo and learnt Maori customs by trial and error. Refers to friendships with other Pakeha men who were in relationships with Maori women. Comments on racial discrimination in accommodation and services in the 1950s and 1960s. Discusses Waiheke's participation in the Maori land march led by Whena Cooper. Comments that he feels relations between Maori and Pakeha have deteriorated since the early 1950s and refers to the dignity of elderly Maori he met up north at that time.
