Photographic postcards written and sent by John Robert Robinson

Date: 1905-1917, date unknown

From: Stegmann, Gillian, active 2016: Collection relating to John Robert Robinson

Reference: PAColl-10597

Description: Comprises black and white photographic postcards written and sent by John Robert Robinson to family members living in Waihi, New Zealand, between 1905 and 1917 and at dates unknown. Taken by photographers Stengel & Co, London; ALC Ltd, B.C.A.; Mia Photo; and other unidentified photographers. Some images have been coloured. Postcards were sent during Robinson's travels in connection with his mining career. One postcard is addressed to his mother Mrs W[illiam Brown] Robinson; one is addressed to 'Bram' [possibly his brother Joseph Bramwell]; all the others are addressed to his sister Mrs David Wilcox (also known as Peg or Maud). Postcards bear greetings and messages by Robinson on the front and reverse. Most postcards are commercially produced and contain touristic images of buildings, statues, people, villages, city centres, churches, and animals from their country of origin. Places depicted are: London, England; British Central Africa; Germany; Tanzania; Budapest, Hungary; Riga, Lativa; Helsinki and Lapland, Finland; Astrakhan on the Caspian sea, St Petersbourg (St Petersburg), Russia; and Norway. One postcard shows the Union Castle Line Royal mail steamer 'Kenilworth Castle'; and another shows a Red Cross hospital barge on the Torne River between Sweden and Finland. Some of the postcards depict European royalty, predominantly members of the Russian Imperial Romanov family: Princesses Olga and Tatiana, Tsarevich Alexei, Tsar Nicholas II, and Tsarina Alexandra. Other postcards depict Prince of Wales and Prince Albert in an open car outside Headland Hotel, Cornwall; and Prince August Wilhem von Preussen (Prussia). Two postcards sent to 'Bram' and to 'Peg' depict orginal photographic images of John Robert Robinson in Finnish Lapland taken in June 1917. They show Robinson standing beside bare spindly trees in a snowy landscape. The messages on the reverse are by Robinson. Annotation in ink on the front of the photographs is probably in another hand. One reads "John in Lapland selecting minerals for 3 Polish Princes May/June 1917" (this covers faint annotation of similar text in pencil). One postcard depicts an original studio photograph of John Robert Robinson standing with another man. Sent from Silberia to 'Peg', Christmas 1909. Also includes one small photograph depicting Robinson standing beside a scenic river. Annotation on reverse reads 'John in Lapland Summer 1916'. Many of the postcards are printed using cyrillic script. One postcard sent in 1916 bears a red '4' kopeck Russian stamp. Arrangement: Postcards were aranged into chronological order by the donor according to the date written by Robinson or the postmark. Where no date was available, the postcards were grouped with similar images. This order has been maintained. Quantity: 42 b&w copy photographic print(s) (commercial postcards; 4 are coloured). 3 b&w original photographic print(s) (original photographic postcards). 1 b&w original photographic print(s). Physical Description: Black and white photographic postcards, some coloured and one bearing a stamp; and one small black and white photographic print Transfers: The photograph of Robinson in Lapand, Finland, in 1916 and a sympathy thank you card by Mrs W B Robinson were both in an envelope annotated by the donor on arrival at the Library. These two pieces were separated for conservation reasons.. Processing information: Postcards were delivered in plastic bags and labelled with an annotated post-it note giving the year of the postcards. The annotations have been transcribed on the external housing for the postcards sets. Not all names have been indexed.

By: Low, David Alexander Cecil (Sir), 1891-1963

Description: Vignettes reflecting current affairs. 'Woes of a cartoonist' shows David Low, his head in his hands, desperately trying to avoid a Wellington problem, where an MP is prosecuting a cartoonist for depicting him from his back view. In a related sketch alongside, Christchurch Mayor, Tommy Taylor, threatens to prosecute the cartoonists, having recognised his own hair in a drawing. A Finnish village is shown chained to the mainland, after a whole village was reported to have floated away in Finland. A ghost threatens a Christchurch City Councillor with a long white beard. The councillor does not known his own mind. A farmer races away after being confronted in Canada with 80,000 prospective brides, a recent reported event. 'The Jap Polar expedition' shows a group of Japanese men greeting the Japanese consul in Christchurch, after their unexpected arrival. Neither group can understand the other, and Japanese script spelling out whisky, cow and banzai is shown. 'The great gas box, via canal' shows a box containing a gas tank too large to travel via the Lyttelton tunnel being hauled by a traction engine.
