Description: A vertical image showing Cook standing on the shore facing left, with his right arm stretched forward. He carries a rifle in his left hand. There is a press of men around him, and one native inhabitant is about to stab him in the back with a knife.There are palm trees above, and part of Cook's sailing ship and the rowboat carrying musket-firing sailors can be seen at the far left. The whole is enclosed in a frame and drapery, as in a memorial. Description: Six-panelled account giving further information about Nicholas Young, his life and premature death in Hawaii and his association with Captain Cook. These illustrations were reproduced in New Zealand newspapers during the late 1940s and 1950s. The newspapers included The Evening Post, Auckland Star, Christchurch Star Sun, Taranaki Herald, Southern Cross, Students' Digest, Greymouth Evening Star, Evening Star (Sports) Dunedin, and the Southland Daily News. In 1953, 48 of them were collected and published as a booklet called 'It happened in New Zealand' by Ross Gore. Information supplied by a great-niece of Nicholas Young to the cartoonist and supplementing his lack of knowledge displayed in a previous cartoon (B-140-017) Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Description: Captain Cook at the water's edge at Kealakekua Bay, Hawaii, using his gun as a club to repel a group of attacking Hawaiians, armed with spears and a slingshot. To the left are two group of sailors in rowboats, with some firing their muskets into the crowd. Cook is wearing a white jacket. There are originals in oils for this work at the National Library of Australia, Canberra, and at the Bernice P. Bishop Museum, Honolulu.
