Letter to the Captain, officers and crew of the steamer Drayton Grange

Description: Annotated draft letter to the Captain, officers and crew of the `Dayton Grange' from Captain H Duit, officers and crew of the Dutch barque `Geertruida Gerarda'. Letter is a thank you for being rescued after the `Geertrudia Gerarda' founded in the Indian Ocean, 800 miles off Fremantle, on the 1st May 1902. The manuscript also refers to New Zealand Premier Richard John Seddon and Lady Seddon who were aboard the `Drayton Grange' on their way to visit South Africa at General Kitchener's request. At least 18 crew men have signed the manuscript. Secondary sources suggest these men arrived in South Africa four weeks after being resuced. Three other crew members of the `Geertruida Gerarda' were picked up by the steamer `Saint Mary' on 11 May and landed at Fremantle on 18 May, 1902. Description: Comprises eight letters written by Lorna Carter on the `Atlantis' from England to New Zealand in 1951 to her family in Oban, Scotland. She describes her experiences, other passengers, activities on board the ship and being on tours at the various ports they visited. The sequence ends in Wellington where she obtained work in the Public Service. The ship sailed past the Spanish coast, through the Suez Canal, the Indian Ocean to Western Australia, and Wellington. One letter includes a song composed for the end of the voyage by two women to the tune of `Thanks for the memory'. Source of title - Supplied Lorna Carter (later Ross) emigrated to New Zealand in 1951 but returned to Scotland in 1954. These letters were written to her family while she was sailing to New Zealand and on her arrival in Wellington in 1951. Quantity: 1 folder(s) (eight pieces). 0.01 Linear Metres.
