Description: The papers consist of: Application form submitted by Douglas George Irwin; land documents; `The Corner, a history of the Smith-Irwin farm' compiled in 2007 by Robyn Irwin (nee Pollock) wife of Douglas. Original owner was John Smith who acquired the property 3 km from Mataura in 1903 from the New Zealand and Australian Land Company. He named the corner block of land `The Corner'; it was later renamed Paramount. The property passed to his daughter-in-law Ellen Irwin and her husband George in 1911; then to their son George William Douglas Irwin in 1946, and to the present owner, their son Douglas George Irwin, in 1990. In 2007 the property was awarded the New Zealand Century Farm and Station award to mark over 100 years of continuous ownership by one family. Quantity: 1 folder(s). Description: Chappie McGowan was born in Invercargill in 1913. Describes how his father worked at the paper mill for fifty six years. Talks about his mother being Presbyterian, becoming Catholic when she married his father and his parents having strong religious views. Notes they did not oppose alcohol and they and Chappie made home brew. Describes how Mataura was in a `dry' area until prohibition was voted out. Mentions making elderberry wine, parsnip wine and beer. Talks about `Waimahaka swamp juice' and Mr Enright. Mentions Mr Enright's whisky was delivered to the rabbit sheds where he was foreman. Describes heavy fines and jail sentences for making Hokonui whisky. Comments on the role of Customs rather than the police in bringing charges. Discusses the influence of the Depression and the war on the popularity of Hokonui. Contends that people were in it to make money. Describes how Hokonui was sometimes delivered in milk cans and `Waimahaka swamp juice' was delivered by the rabbit lorry. Mentions the closest pub was at Mandeville and locals would hire a taxi to the pub. Description: Montague Bolger was born in Christchurch in 1910. Mentions his Irish grandparents meeting on the journey to New Zealand and subsequently having four sons. Notes that his parents John and Ethel had six sons. Recalls his father's employment at Costers coal mine, the Mataura Freezing Works and on their farm on the Mataura Winton road. Describes attending the Mataura School and leaving at the age of fourteen. Talks about working as engine driver at Rowes coal mine where his father was manager. Describes the job conditions, rate of pay, working hours, use of explosives, machinery and the change from steam to motor power. Recalls sitting his exam for second class steam ticket. Talks about the uprade of the Winton Road and the provision of gravel and water by Rowes Mines. Mentions coal deliveries by Lindsay Rowe and taking over this job. Describes the Depression, being offered work at the New Zealand Paper Mill at Mataura in 1936 and the installation of a new boiler. Comments on finishing working with coal. Talks about getting his first class steam ticket in 1940. Describes how Fletchercorp took over the paper mill. Discusses an exam, visiting the Secretary of the Institute of Marine and Power Engineers, membership of the Institute and the status at the mill of the old millhands. Describes becoming senior shift engineer and then power house engineer until his retirement in 1975. Description: Transparencies of bridges in New Zealand, taken by Geoffrey Thornton or Jocelyn Thornton. Each slide mount is annotated with the subject (bridge or viaduct name, and/or river/stream name, and/or road name) and location. Dates and photographer name are often but not always annotated. Title supplied by Library. Arrangement: Transparencies were arranged in an upright slide container with two rows of slide drawers, comprising 10 slide drawers in total. Slides were arranged in the container largely alphabetically either by bridge or river name, or location name, and possibly also by type of bridge. Slides were physically arranged from top to bottom and across both rows. The container was labelled as follows: "Concrete 1 - 5 | Stone Arch 6 - 7 | Steel Arch 8 also Brick | Stone Arch Concrete Arch 2 - pt 5 | Concrete Girder pt 5-6".
