Description: Contains biographical material about James Weddell, a copy of the `Dictionary of National Biography' article on him, and a description of the James Weddell archive held by Bernard Quaritch Ltd. Also contains photographs of material held, including manuscripts, maps, a portrait of Weddell, Weddell's drawing of a sea leopard of South Orkneys and a painting of the `Jane' and the `Beaufoy' in the Antarctic Ocean in 1823. Physical Description: Typescript and photographs Provenance: John Brown, a friend of James Weddell, collected an archive of material relating to him. Brown's son, John Allen Brown, presented the collection to the Royal Scottish Geographical Society. In 1993 the Society decided to sell the collection and it was passed to Bernard Quaritch Ltd who provided the Alexander Turnbull Library these papers and photographs relating to the material for sale. The Library did not make an offer for the papers.

Description: Journal gives full account of the voyage from England to South Georgia, the loss of the Endurance in the pack ice, and life on Elephant Island during the wait for rescue. Lacks entries for 25 Jun 1915-8 Jan 1916. Many photographs. Material also includes photographs and newsclippings concerned with the early development of parachutes. Publication - The Orde Lees diaries have now been published - John Thomson `Elephant Island and beyond. The Life and diaries of Thomas Orde Lees', 2003. Orde Lees was seconded by the Admiralty to Sir Ernest Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914-1917. He was the motor expert and later store-keeper. These cards feature Captain Robert Falcon Scott, Commander E R G R Evans, Captain L E G Oates, Dr Edward Adrian Wilson, Staff-Paymaster Francis Drake, Lieutenant H R Bowers, the "Terra Nova' arriving off Cape Evans Feb 1911, Captain Oates exercising a Siberian pony, Demetri the Russian dog-driver keeping a penguin from the dogs, Unpacking sledge and setting up camp, a football match at winter quarters, Midwinter day at Cape Evans, preparing one of the motor sledges, a sledge team on King Edward VII Plateau, a sledge party crossing a crevasse, Commander Evans' sledge flag, Dr Atkinson's supporting party, Commander Evans taking observations, Weddel seals asleep on the sea-ice, an Adelie penguin and his mate, an Adelie penguin with a young one, the Norwegian Antarctic Expedition 1910-1912 - Captain Roald Amundsen, Lindstrom the cook, Amundsen at the South Pole, Oscar Wisting at the South Pole. Description: Diary accounts by McNeish of the 1914-1916 Trans-Antarctic expedition under the command of Ernest Shackleton. The diary records the departure of the `Endurance', the ship's imprisonment in pack ice in the Weddell Sea, its destruction, the ice and sea journey by the crew to Elephant Island, and the voyage by Shackleton, McNeish and three others to South Georgia in the whale boat `James Caird'. Last pages contain a holograph letter to McNeish from Shackleton, 16 May 1916, written on South Georgia. Note that a leaf or leaves are missing (and were when the item arrived at the Library). The missing portion begins part way through the 7 April 1916 entry through to the first part of the 16 April 1916 entry. Source of title - Supplied title Other - Name McNeish is as on spine. This was the name he was known by at the time of his death. However, the main entry is McNish which was his original name, and the name he was known by during his Antarctic expeditions. Description: Card shows a view of Cockburn Island as seen from Seymour Island, in the Weddell Sea, south of Tierra del Fuego. The foreground shows penguins and a gull on Seymour Island. The verso, written in French, states that the islands are of volcanic origin and have sparse vegetation. They are inhabited only by seals. In 1892 Captain Larsen collected many fossils from the island which was used by whalers at the time this card was published. Exhibited in ‘Humble: the life of 100 small objects’, exhibition curated by Barbara Lyon, in the Turnbull Gallery, National Library of New Zealand, 27 August - 17 November 2017.
