Clere, Frederick de Jersey, 1856-1952: Victoria College; design submitted by F de J Cle...

Date: 1903 - 1904

By: Clere, Frederick de Jersey, 1856-1952

Reference: C-071-006

Description: Shows a view from Kelburn Parade of Clere's proposal for his competition entry for buildings for Victoria College, Wellington. The building is two-storied and its front face is towards Kelburn Parade. There is a glimpse of the Mount Street cemetery beyond the building to the left, featuring the gravestone with a tall cross of Father O'Reily. Probably a copy by Clere of his unsuccessful design in the competition for the University building on the Salamanca Road-Kelburn Parade site, won by F Penty and E M Blake, Jun 1903, with what became the Hunter Building. Date of drawing 29/07/04 may relate to foundation stone ceremony, 27 Aug 1904, rather than the date of execution of the drawing, although it may also indicate that this was a later copy of Clere's original watercolour. There were nine entries in the competition, all submitted over a pseudonym. Penty & Blake came first (with a 2-storey building, expanded to three storeys for space reasons); Joshua Charlesworth was 2nd. 'Associate' was 3rd, and 'Mr A.' was 4th. Possibly Clere's entry was submitted over the name 'Experience' Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - signature & date in ink. Also lower right, the title of the work in ink with other words below in pencil, including the word 'Experience' Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour on linen-backed paper 291 x 558 mm on sheet 392 x 615 mm
