Description: Photographs taken during the New Zealand British Empire Games team's journey to Britian on the SS Remuera. Passengers, boat drill and other shipboard activities are recorded. There are pictures of the Panama Canal, and a few of Colon. Though there are photographs of athletes and one or two of the events at the Games, this album is more about socialising and the places visited while in England. Swimming pools are prety well covered including the Kingfisher's Pool in Epping Forest where the New Zealand swimmers trained, and the big new covered Empire Swimming Pool in London. Views from their London hotel, Wimbeldon, and a visit to Eton College where they were looked after by school boys in top hats and tails. While visiting Croydon Airport they took a flight over the outer suburbs of London in a multi engined air liner. They saw Windsor Castle, the trooping of the colour, and visited Chester Cathedral. Description: Album probably compiled by Keith Southward, a New Zealand airman in World War II, showing training in New Zealand, Canada (Halifax) and England. Opens with a group photograph of women and airmen at the ANZAC Club in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Panama Canal taken March 1942 on the way to Canada. Views of Halifax, airmen, and convoy which took them to Britain. Servicemen in Bounmouth, England, and views of Bournemouth. Views of London, some of its notable buildings, and bomb damage. Views of the lake district aquired on a trip taken in August 1942. Many pages of postcards, commercial photographs of cities and villages visited in England. These are interspersed with photographs of airmen and other people. There are also three pages of photographs of Oxford training aircraft, probably taken in Canada. Description: Journal kept by Hunter while travelling from England to New Zealand on the `Rangitata' and his return to England on the `Makura' to Australia and the Orsova' from Sydney from 23 Oct 1931 to 26 Apr 1932. He travelled with Ena Hunter. He describes their preparations, embarkation at Southampton, the other passengers, food (including menus), sea sickness, entertainments, the comforts and otherwise of the ship, his cabin, their passage through the Panama Canal and Armstice Day. They disembarked at Wellington 24 Nov 1931, and left for Australia on the `Makura' 7 Mar 1932, and for England on the `Orsova' from Sydney, 13 Mar 1932. In New Zealand Hunter spent time in Wellington, visiting the Alexander Turnbull Library, describing the work of the League of Nations Union in Wellington, visits Christchurch, the West Coast and Nelson where he spent some time, Wanganui, the Waitomo Caves, Rotorua and Auckland and back through Taranaki where he climbed Mt Egmont; he visited farms and factories, observed the opening of Parliament (24 Feb 1932) and visited the Gear Freezing and Meat Preservation Company. He attended many church services in various churches including the Congregational, Church of Christ and Presbyterian churches. Folowing his and Ena's departure for Sydney he describes the new Sydney harbour bridge, their visit to Tasmania and the House of Commons in Hobart, visiting to Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Colombo, the Suez Canal, Naples and Gibraltar, and an ANZAC commemoration service he declined to attend. The journal is illustrated and includes a water colour of the `Rangitata', newspaper clippings of portraits of various New Zealanders; and a copy of a letter from the Turnbull to the donor (1986). Description: Album compiled by Frederic Kingsford of 23rd Reinforcements Auckland Infantry Regiment, A Company, ca 1919. It is a pictorial record of his tours around Britain and Ireland before embarking on the 'Tainui' for his return journey to New Zealand. The return journey by way of Panama, included a stop over at Norfolk, Virginia, USA, and another at Colon, Panama, before passing through the canal. The British section of the album includes shots of a regatta held on the river at Walton on Thames where the New Zealand Hospital and depot was located. There are photographs of the clergy and the Royal family leaving Westminster Abbey after the Memorial service for overseas fallen, 14 May 1919. Others show the Australian and New Zealand stands at the Henley Regatta where the Australians won the Kings Cup from Oxford. Finally about four days before leaving for New Zealand he attended the Peace Procession at Glasgow (4 August 1919) in which colonial troops took part. The Tainui cleared Plymouth Sound bound for North America on the 8 August 1919.
