Description: A humourous depiction of New Zealand pilots flying from Royal Air Force Station Hornchurch in Essex, England, during the Battle of Britain. The planes are drawn by Bill Hooper, with photographic representations of the pilots' heads aboard the planes. The four pilots are all identified, and each of them has added their signature: Flt. Lt. A C Deere, 54 Squadron; Pilot Officer C F Gray, 54 Squadron; Pilot Officer E P Wells, 41 Squadron; and Fg. Off. J N Mackenzie, 41 Squadron. German planes are shown being devastated by the New Zealanders. In the bottom right corner, Hooper's signature character, Pilot Officer Prune, stands smoking a cigarette, leaning against a signpost pointing to Catterick, Hornchurch, and 'Home NZ'. He has a kiwi standing at his side. The accompanying caption reads: 'Pilot Officer Prune said of those New Zealanders who flew from RAF Hornchurch during the Balltle of Britain, 1940: "Well, of course those NZ types were intrepid aviators - hero-type bods, those Kiwis of '41 and '54 - but I bet I destroyed more aircraft than all of 'em put together!" Description: Material belonging to Arthur Bellingham, relating to his service in the New Zealand Army during World War One. Comprises: - Pressed flowers "picked up in a ditch outside Ypres, Belgium". [Bellingham did not serve in Belgium. The flowers may have been gifted to him or picked up when he was on leave. They were likely picked between 1914 and 1917.] - An annotated menu for the 'Re-union of British Section New Zealand Expeditionary Force' held on 6 May 1916 at Restaurant Frascati, Oxford Street, London. The menu has been signed by Bellingham and a number of men he served with. - An annotated menu and toast list for the 'New Zealand Expeditionary Force "Records" Dinner' held on 15 February 1917. It has been signed by Bellingham and a number of men he served with. - A souvenir booklet titled 'The First Anniversary of Anzac Day. Celebrations at Hornchurch, April 25th, 1916' by Charles T. Perfect. The booklet details events attended by the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in England, to commemorate the first anniversary of Anzac Day. These included: a memorial service on 23 April 1916 (Easter Sunday) at the Parish Church of St Andrew's, Hornchurch; a march through the streets of London followed by a memorial service at Westminster Abbey on 25 April 1916; a ceremony at Grey Towers, Hornchurch on the afternoon of 25 April; and sports and races on 26 April at Grey Towers. The booklet also contains: a description of Te Whare Puni at Grey Towers; commemoration and congratulatory telegrams; and a description of the 'Masonic Anzac Festival' held on 27 April 1916 at the Royal Forest Hotel, Chingford. The booklet has been signed by Bellingham. - A certificate for 'The New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal' which was awarded to Bellingham on 19 April 1990. It is signed by Her Majesty The Queen, Prime Minister Geoffrey Palmer, and Governor-General Paul Reeves. Accompanying the certificate is an explanatory note detailing the 'Order of Wear', 'Bow', and 'Miniatures'. Date information for pressed flowers taken from Arthur Bellingham's service record. On his way back from Germany Lindsay Mackersey travelled through Belgium and France, and there are photographs of war damaged buildings. Other photographs were taken during the channel crossing to Folkestone, after which he was based at Hornchurch. Photographs of English places include - Folkstone. Hornchurch. Amesbury. Oxford. London and the Albert Memorial. Leslie Mackersey was in the 6th Rifles 1 NZEF. Lindsay Mackersey was in the 24th Rifles. While in the occupation force in Germany he served as instructor-in-law to service men studying for law degrees prior to repatriation. He was bilited in Leverhusen Village near Cologne in 1919. Description: Album compiled by a member of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, 1914-1918. It contains views of New Zealand Expeditionary Force camps in England, the Grey Towers Hospital, Te Whare Puni club for New Zealand soldiers, Royal Bath Hospital (at Harrogate), Oatlands Park Hotel (in use as a convalescent hospital), Malta, Gallipoli (including the landing party, in the bivvies, Anzac Cove and Walker's Ridge) and Capetown. Activities at the various camps and convalescent hospitals included mending gear, playing two-up, skinning hares for dinner, playing bowls, snow-fights.
