Description: Comprises a photograph album containing images taken William Dougall and Frank Coxhead between 1861 and 1889 showing views of Otago and Fiordland, and a voyage to Campbell, Auckland and Antipodes Islands. Dougall's account of the voyage on the 'Stella' was published in The Southland Times between 15 to 21 February 1888 under the column heading "Far South". Negatives and photographic prints taken by William Dougall are also held at Te Papa Tongarewa Museum of New Zealand. Two copies of the 'Far South' pamphlet which accompanied the photograph album are held in the National Library of New Zealand catalogue at PAM 919.31 DOU 1888 and Pam 1888 DOU 1545 (Alexander Turnbull Library copy). Photographer William Dougall travelled as official photographer on the New Zealand government steamer CGS 'Stella' to the Stewart, Snares, Auckland, Campbell, Antipodes and Bounty Islands in 1888. His account and photographs of the voyage were published as set of a bound photograph album and a pamphlet titled 'Far South: Stewart Island, The Snares, Auckland, Campbell, Antipodes and Bounty Islands: Notes' in 1888. Description: Album created by G E Mannering, some photographs taken by him. A number of these are of children, only identified by nick-names, or Christian names; and one of an older man in a top hat is named `Grandad'. Several views of the children are taken at the beach at New Brighton in 1893. An interior photograph of an office `The consulting desk' was taken by `HMP'. Photographs also include a scene of hay making, and several of scenes relating to sheep farming, including sheep drafting, and one of 120 bales of wool from `Double Hill Estate' loaded onto four wagons, towed by W.A. McLaren's traction engine. Other scenes in Christchurch include the Christchurch Cathedral; and early photographs of Christ's College, when the buildings were in `corrugated iron Tudor' style; and a house with a century plant (agave americana) in the foreground. The rest of the scenes are mixed, with a few tourist scenes of Maori outside a meeting house, and a group in a hot spring at Tokaanu, and a newspaper cutting with photograph of Rewi Maniapoto from the Christchurch Press (no date). Description: Transparency slides of New Zealand selected by Mr Williams as a representative collection to be used in a series of lectures on his return to England. This group includes both slides Mr Williams took himself, and slides he purchased. Several of these were taken by Neville Hatwell. This sheet shows Queenstown Lakes District, and Milford. Views include Queenstown; the Remarkables in the evening with the launch 'Moana' moored at a pier on Lake Wakatipu in the foreground; Lake Manapouri; Te Anau township; the Eglinton Valley and Hollyford Valley, both taken by Neville Hatwell; portal of the Homer Tunnel, and views the other side en route to Milford Sound, including Mount Tutoko and the Cleddau River; the Milford Track; views of the Sound, Sutherland Falls, Lake Ada, Sandfly Point and Sinbad Gully; and the Milford Sound airstrip with a small plane on the runway. The slides are not filed in his original numerical sequence, and are selected by subject relating to particular talks.
