Description: Comprises letters sent from Charles and Eliza to relatives in England describing the voyage, living and working conditions and prospects in Auckland, letters from Eliza telling of her husband's death. Papers of Edward Collier, of Middlesex, including marriage certificate, letters, legal documents, invoices and accounts, 1841-1884; and miscellaneous papers relating to the Collier family in England. Included is a letter from an Eliza Collier dated 1816. Source of title - Supplied Charles and Eliza Collier emigrated to New Zealand in 1865 on the ship Rob Roy. They settled at Newton, Auckland. Description: Album of photographs, most taken by the Burton Brothers in New Zealand, including a large number of Maori images, group portraits, identified men and women, pa, and storehouses. Scenes also taken by them in Tonga and Samoa. A number of images show scenes in England, including a group taken near Egremont in Cumbria, of ice on the Mersey River in 1895. There are a large number of copies of paintings of romantic scenes. Description: Postcard soliciting a vote for candidate Joseph A Tole in the General Election of 1884 (held on a Tuesday). Tole promises to serve his constituents faithfully and hopes that he can rely on their vote "in this political crisis". This card is addressed in handwriting on the verso, to Charles Johns esqr, upholsterer, Karangahape Road, Newton. The one penny stamp is preprinted on to the card. The postmark date is 14 July 1884. Comments that the decision to come to New Zealand was already made for her as her husband was already in New Zealand and indicates that she had a choice of either coming to New Zealand or getting a divorce. Recalls that she lived in a patriarchal environment where she had no input into the decision making and how she endured much hardship under this oppression.
