Kaikohe

Originally a Māori (Ngāpuhi) village called Opango. In the early 19th century Rewha Rewha, rangatira of Ngati Whatua, raided the village and fugitives subsisted among the Kohekohe groves on Tokareireia (Kaikohe Hill). After the incident, the village became known as Kaikohekohe but was later shortened to Kaikohe.
