Photographs include views of the coastline and hill landscape of the island, farm buildings and houses, a pier on a bay, a derelict building on the bay [probably Perano whaling station], various rusty shackles and a harpoon, and a gravestone. Description: Interview with Joe Heberley, born at Blenheim in 1943. Refers to growing up in Tory Channel where his parents were both from whaling families. Mentions joining his father whaling at Great Barrier for the Byron Bay Whaling Company in 1959, and for a short time in 1963 for the Peranos in Tory Channel. Discusses working on the mothership Colville as a deck hand and then as a gunner on a chaser by his second season. Comments on risks and dangers, learning from experienced whalers, and whaling being more difficult in Cook Strait. Discusses the devastating effect of the collapse of whaling which they attributed to overwhaling by foreign vessels. Refers to farming and commercial fishing after whaling, and mentions many whalers farmed in the off-season. Talks about the community spirit in Queen Charlotte Sound with farmers assisting each other, but now being virtually the only farmers left. Refers to being approached by Simon Childerhouse of the Department of Conservation to set up an annual whale count from a lookout on his farm on Arapawa Island, noting that he and other fishermen had been reporting whale sightings since the 1970s. Mentions sighting began in 2004 with other former whalers including Tom Norton and Peter Perano. Comments that they look forward to contributing to conservation efforts. Description: Interview with Geoff Godsiff, born at Picton in 1926. Talks about growing up on the family farm in the Bay of Many Coves, Queen Charlotte Sound. Mentions living with grandparents in Kaikoura for four years to attend school and then finishing his education at home through the Correspondence School. Refers to his mother running a guest house during the Depression, and naval activities in the Marlborough Sounds during World War 2. Comments on the simple life and hard work farming in the area. Discusses his various jobs including boat building and dairy farming. Talks about residents in the Bay of Many Coves, the planting of pines from 1934-1935, and the first holiday homes. Comments on unstable land and erosion in the Sounds. Mentions his family took on a farm on Arapawa Island in 1952 which he managed. Discusses the use of barges for bulk transport to and from farms in the Sounds. Refers to selling his farm and moving to Picton when his son was 10 for his education.
