Description: Album of photographs relating to the service of Lyna Todd Newell (later Dibble) as a nurse in Egypt and England during World War One, taken between circa 1915 and 1917. Newell, who features as a subject on some of the photographs, probably took many of the images in this collection. Includes captions, but most are too faint to read. - Features three pictures under the heading "1st Wedding in the NZ ANS [New Zealand Army Nursing Service] - Cairo", taken at the wedding of Nurse Mildred Jane Ellis and Lieutenant Alexander Edward Wrottesley Salt at Cairo, 21 May 1916. - Includes photographs taken in Egypt circa 1915-1916 showing gate of New Zealand General Hospital in Cairo, military personnel posing with camels at the pyramids and Great Sphinx of Giza, temple ruins and pillars at Luxor, group portrait of Egyptian women, and hospital train in Alexandria. Other images show the sultan's palace, the sultan's guard, a swing bridge over a canal in Barrage Gardens, the river Nile, and the citadel of Cairo. - Images from England feature Bournemouth Beach, Bournemouth Gardens, also the Rufus Stone and Compton Arms Hotel, in New Forest. Scenes include New Zealanders in the advance party sailing from Melbourne in December 1939; shipboard scenes of the First Echelon arriving in Egypt; Freyberg welcoming the troops on arrival with Anthony Eden (Secretary of State for the Dominions) and Sir Miles Lampson; the train service between the NZ camp and Cairo; Egyptian workmen helping construct the camp, and women doing the laundry; Divisional Signallers lined up on motor bikes. Description: Photograph album containing photographs of Luxor and Samoa during World War I Views in Egypt include ancient sites at Luxor, Karnak and Thebes, and one of water buffalo by the Nile. The second part of the album starts with a view of the harbour at Noumea showing a number of warships in the distance which are named as HMS Australia, HMS Melbourne, HMS Psyche, HMS Philomel, HMS Pyramus, and the French warship Montcalm. Most of the images in the second part relate to the arrival of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in Apia, Samoa; the surrender of Samoa by Germany; group portraits of many of the British and New Zealand officers involved in the takeover (most of whom are identified by surname); and scenes of life in Samoa. Description: Photograph album compiled by Alexander Gillies, relating to his service with the NZYMCA (New Zealand Young Men's Christian Association) in Egypt and Palestine during World War One, 1916-1919. Some prints include captions that identify locations, mainly well-known sites in Jerusalem. Images mainly relate to YMCA centres and events. 36 prints depict a garden party for convalescing soldiers at Ezbekiah Gardens. Prints show crowds of soldiers in conversation, eating lunch, and watching or participating in games (egg and spoon race, sack race, donkey rides). Prints also show women serving food or drinks, and the Ezbekiah Garden YMCA centre in detail (band rotunda, notices, decorations, tables and chairs, plants). Photographs taken on different occasions depict further views of the entrance, main stage, indoor areas, and visiting soldiers or YMCA workers. Eight prints show different unidentified YMCA performances, tents, huts, vehicles, and workers in Jerusalem as well as other unidentified locations. One hut is labelled "Whaler Past". Portraits of identified individuals include a baby possibly called "Myanoir", "Minerva Page. North Vancouver. 1923", and Gillies himself (bottom right, page 12, with moustache). A postcard with a portrait of six performers is labelled "The Lena Ashwell YMCA Concert Party Egypt". The identifiable signatures on reverse are: Sylvia De Gay, Grace lvell, Marjorie Ffrangcon-Davies, Yvette Pienne, and [?] Flint. The final name is obscured. Portraits of unidentified individuals include a woman holding a lizard, a woman patting a donkey, a young girl, two boxers, and various men in civilian dress or military uniforms. Group portraits include a Pierrot Troupe at Helouan, unidentified performers (possibly in Heliopolis), and many groups of unidentified soldiers. One portrait of soldiers is labelled "34". Gillies appears in group portraits on pages 21 and 26. Images also relate to both routine and unusual military events. Five prints depict Erich von Falkenhyan and Jamal Pasha in Jerusalem (inspecting troops, surveying land, meeting a little girl). Other images show solders in a trench "near Birshaiba", the interior of a "Fancy Store", and a priest conducting a funeral with a group of soldiers around a grave. The print is labelled "W. Sant". Prints depicting a sports day at "Mahomediya Hospital" show convalescing soldiers either watching or playing hockey, volleyball, basketball, croquet, and clock golf. Four prints show a 1918 water polo match in the sea at Alexandria (Abbassia versus Sidi Bishir). Images related to sightseeing mainly show groups of unidentified soldiers at well-known locations around Jerusalem. Locations depicted in Egypt include Memphis, and Philae. Five prints show Gillies and other soldiers (Roy Clack, C.W. Whitehair, Corporal Gas, W. Boyd) with Egyptian guides at the Sphinx and Pyramids at Giza. Seventeen tourist prints show ruins at Karnak and Luxor. Sites photographed in Cairo include the Zoological Gardens, Luna Park in Helipolis, and the Royal Entrance at Cairo Station. Five prints show multiple interior and exterior views of the Mosque of Muhammad Ali. Other images show street scenes, daily life, and unidentified local people in Cairo, Alexandria, Gaza, and Jerusalem. Subjects include local workers, their machinery and animals, a wedding procession, and church dignitaries with the Bishop of Jerusalem at his enthronement (1918). Waterway images show Felucca boats in a canal, "headwaters at the Pyramids", and an unidentified bay with a breakwater, possibly Alexandria or Port Said. Description: One photograph album with images taken mostly by Stanley Gadfield Aglionby Burrowes, who was with the Wellington Mounted Rifles in World War I. The photos were taken in Egypt and the Middle East between 1915 and the end of the war. Album compiled by donor. Images document that Burrowes and the Mounted Rifles were involved in the defence of Egypt and the subsequent Middle Eastern campaign when the transport company that Burrowes was in was developed into an ambulance corps. Pictures show the ambulance train, the Camel Corps, horsedrawn sandcarts and the slow mule team. There are photos of the Mounted Rifle Camp, the Ambulance Camp, `the boys' relaxing, Bedouins, prisoners of war (Germans, Turks and Bedouins), graveyards at Alexandria (of troops from Gallipoli) and Romani and the towns of Luxor, Port Said, Rafa, Jerusalem and Cairo. Description: Photographs of Palestine, Egypt and the Middle East, probably taken by Roger Lupton who was on active service there. As there are captions relating to the AMR, it is assumed that he was with the Auckland Mounted Rifles Regiment. They are mostly of places of interest in the area such as the Monastery of St George at Wadi Qelt; the Crusaders' Tower in Richon; the Mosque of Omar, the Garden of Gethsemane and the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem; temple ruins at Luxor; the Agricultural College in Jaffa; the River Jordan; a Roman amphitheatre in Amman; the German Church in Bethlehem; the Church of Lazarus in Bethany; the inside of the Russian Church in Jaffa; and a man and a woman floating in the Dead Sea. However, there are others relating to the campaign: a pontoon bridge over the River Jordan; Kastal Railway Station on the Mecca line with a long goods train being loaded; the remains of the Turkish gun Jericho Jane (Turkish gun used in the Jordan Valley during the First World War so named as its range was long enough to hit Jericho from the opposite side of the vally, twelve miles away. Includes pre World War One views taken in New Zealand; Lieutenant Colonel William George Malone in his dress uniform (possibly taken after his promotion to Lt. Colonel), assembled soldiers wearing lemon squeezer hats (possibly Territorial Force at camp), 11th Regiment (Taranaki Rifles) 1913, Ida Katherine, second wife, and son Maurice with others on wharf farewelling NZEF troops 14 October 1914 (taken by W.G Malone from troopship 'Arawa'. Also includes view of W.G. Malone clean shaven in army uniform (uncertain date, possibly 1908 or 1915). One group of views were taken in Egypt and Gallipoli during World War One by W.G Malone or possibly with his camera. Views in Egypt show Capt. R.E Coningham (?), 10 Ghurka Rifles, outside army tent at El Kubri, Egypt, G.S.O (General Staff Officer) to Malone; William George Malone with Capt Horne (Home?) sight-seeing at the Sphinx and Pyramids, Luxor; Arab guides and camels; Malone on his horse 'The Don' in Zeitoun Camp; and framed photograph of Ida Katherine on desk in Malone's tent. Prints on pages extracted from photograph album include a view of 'The Farlands', the second Malone family homestead, Stratford. Views taken at Gallipoli show W.G Malone outside his bivouacs on Walkers Ridge and Cape Helles, including scene of Malone with (possibly) Capt R.E. Coningham. Gallipoli views include original prints taken April to May 1915 by W.G. Malone showing views of fortifications on Walkers Ridge; the battlefield of Krithia; the ship 'Clyde' run ashore at old Sedd-El-Bahr Port ruins; Reserve Gully; burial of dead Turkish soldiers on the day of armstice to bury the dead (24 May 1915). One group of photographs show the sons of W.G Malone in military uniforms. Those in World War One uniforms are Maurice Patrick (serial no. 11/1338) (solo portrait and group portrait with machine gun soldiers and equipment), Brian Bernard (5/2), Terence Joseph (11/553), Edmond Leo (11/699). Includes William Bernard 'Barney' circa 1939 to 1943. Also includes soldier who served under W.G. Malone, Sergeant Jacob ('Jack') Randup Moller standing outside King George V Hospital, Rotorua. Includes views of memorial plaque to W.G Malone and Lieutenant Colonel Charles Frederick Denman Cook on wall of All Saints Church, Palmerston North, and view of crowd at official unveiling of Malone Memorial Gate, King Edward Park, Stratford, August 1923. Description: Diary continues from MSX-2544 with Malone commanding the New Zealand troops at the Suez Canal. Describes living and fighting conditions, the activities of his men, and conferences of Unit Command. Also comments on his own personal activities like visiting the dentist, reading mail and arranging a beer for his men. New Zealand troops withdrawn from the Canal on 26 Feb 1915 to Zeitoun Camp. Training his men in the hot winds of the Sahara Desert, and night Divisional exercises. Marched to Avenue de Koubbah on 25 Mar 1915. Four days leave from 29 Mar 1915, visits Luxor, Nile, Karnak, and the Tomb of Queen Nefertari. 3 Apr 1915 Malone comments that he has received word to embark for Turkey aboard the `Itonus'. Diary ends 9 Apr 1915 as troops ready to entrain to Alexandria. Malone takes photographs (for the families) of the graves of the three men of the Battalion who had died so far: Private John A Campbell, Private Albert G Cooper, and Private Bethel J Simpson. Description: Album of views in Egypt and Gallipoli during World War I, compiled by Alfred Edward Cameron (1894-1967). Includes views of Suez, the Nile, Matarieh, Luxor, and Turkish trenches. Cameron sailed from New Zealand to Egypt with the Main Body of the NZEF in Oct 1914 and served as a trumpeter with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles.
