This was Pitara Takawheta Mokonuiarangi's book - he was chief of Ngati Rangitihi and Tapahoro and heir of Niheta Kaipara Mokonuiarangi (who was killed in the eruption of Tarawera). It contains copies of petitions to Parliament and other letters, some whakapapa, census of Matata ca 1870 and lists of families, births, deaths and marriages of his immediate family. Description: Photocopy of a topographic map, including military notes, of the area from Matata to Tarere, including the Oputao River. The Ruatahuna District is referred to. Rivers, settlements and some tracks are named. Notes about these tracks include information about the condition of them and time taken by foot soldiers and on horseback. Includes some battle sites, also the time taken to reach one destination and the farthest point reached by St. John. Extensive notes about place names, distances and the scale are partially obscured by strips of paper during the copying process. A second scale was written on the strip of paper on the map prior to copying, and a dashed line on the map states 'reduced scale'. Includes Pano Kingi's name in a note. Title and cartographer's name handwritten twice in pencil at top left of map, believed added at later dates. This information used as title of the map. '68/1882 1/96.8' is handwritten on top right corner. The name 'Oputao (R)' pencilled in at a later date. 'Neg' handwritten in pencil on top left of map. Quantity: 1 map(s). Description: Items originally in a box Binney labelled 'Prophet photos' Chiefly photographs of Maori grave markers in the Far North district (but also some in Otaki, Onehunga, Matata and Whangara) taken in 1971, 1972, 1975 and 1983 by Kendrick Smithyman. Many show the symbols of the heart, diamond, club and spade and some, or all, of these, may be the work of carver Nutana Mapi. Also a few Pakeha graves. Also includes photographs of other subjects taken by Smithyman: a drawing by Eric Lee-Johnson of a carved wooden grave marker at Rangiahua; a clock tower at Rangiahua; a clock tower at Otago University; a carved wooden altar piece in a church at Motukaraka. Also includes a photograph of Penetana Papahurihia's grave marker taken by historian Ruth Miriam Ross in 1972, and an accompanying letter from Ross to Judith, dated about 1976, noting the inscription on the stone and further details.
