Description: Loose leaf shipboard diary by Richard Pheney written during a voyage from Gravesend to New Plymouth on the 'Eden' in 1850, and subsequent voyages between New Zealand settlements. The diary is written in letter form, addressed to "Richard", with the first entry dated "Bay of Biscay, 20th June 1850". Some of the stations along the journey described include arrival at Isle of Wright on 11 June 1850, and off Madeira on 28 June 1850. The voyage ends at New Plymouth on 28 October 1850 - 140 days after departure from Gravesend. The diary then describes New Plymouth and another voyage from there to Nelson departing on 6 November 1850, and a voyage from Nelson to Port Nicholson departing on 25 November 1850 and arriving on 30 November 1850. The final sections of the diary describe Wellington, New Plymouth, and suggested articles for import and resale, and are dated "Wellington Decb. 3rd, 1850", "Wellington Dec. 6, 1850", with the latter addressed as "My dear Richard & Frank", and "New Plymouth 6 January 1851". Description: Shows two sketches, the upper one a coastal profile of Porto Santo, and the lower one a larger sketch of the Deserta Islands with a small sailing ship in front of them. Swainson sailed to Brazil in 1817, and in 1840/41 on his way to New Zealand. The route to Brazil seems likely to have passed close by Madeira (it included the Cape Verde Islands further south), and therefore this sketch may have been executed on either voyage. Description: Letterbook by Rear-Admiral John Graham Job Hanmer of the Royal Navy, from the period of his service as commander of the HMS 'President' and HMS 'Daring', 1873-1883. The volume is in two sections, each comprising copies of letters and dispatches in various hands. The first section comprises letters from the period 1873-1874 to various recipients including the Secretary of the Admiralty. The first entry is dated 1 September 1873 and records the fact that Hanmer has taken command of the HMS 'President' at West India Docks. The final entry in the first section is dated 26 September 1874. The correspondence records activities aboard HMS 'President' relating to the crew, supplies for the ship, financial matters, crew awards and promotions. The second section records the official correspondence from HMS 'Daring' under the command of Hanmer dated from the period 1 November 1874 to 27 April 1883. Includes commentary on a voyage in the Pacific Ocean by HMS 'Daring' as part of Britain's Pacific Station responsibilities. Includes communications addressed from Spithead, Madeira, Rio de Janeiro, Falkland Islands, Valparaiso, Coquimbo, Callao, Islay (Peru), Pabellón de Pica, Arica, Iquique, Panama, Corinto, Nicaragua, Acapulco, San Lucas, San Diego, San Francisco, Esquimalt, Society Islands, Papeete, Honolulu, Monte Video, Ascension Island, Sheerness, and Chatham.
