Description: Lord Ranfurly's party crossing the Whakatane River, photographed in March 1904 by Malcolm Ross, during the last stage of their journey from Waikaremoana to Ruatoki. Lord Ranfurly is riding the grey pony in the centre. Inscriptions: Album page - beneath image - "Late in the afternoon we rode through the broad swift-flowing waters of the Whakatane". Malcolm Ross, in "Through Tuhoe land" (Christchurch Press, 1904) states that "Late in the afternoon the Governor and his party rode through the broad, swift-flowing waters of the Whakatane, here a noble river, and rode slowly forward towards the native village of Ruatoki, where were gathered about a thousand of the tribespeople and the representatives of all the Maori Councils of New Zealand." Description: Folder includes articles written about a tramp through the Urewera by members of the University Tramping Club, which began on Christmas Eve, 1924: the first by S A Wiren was published in The New Zealand Free Lance in February 1925; the other is a typewritten account by J C Beaglehole, and an abbreviated version of this, printed in the 1931 annual `Rata'. Describes meeting an old Maori at Ohaua marae who fought with Te Kooti. In addition notes by Beaglehole on that trip, written much later, are included, with a hand-written article `Tramping Club: the First Years' offered for the Club's 50th anniversary. Description: Transparencies of bridges in New Zealand, taken by Geoffrey Thornton or Jocelyn Thornton. Each slide mount is annotated with the subject (bridge or viaduct name, and/or river/stream name, and/or road name) and location. Dates and photographer name are often but not always annotated. Title supplied by Library. One slide is annotated with "1960s". Arrangement: Transparencies were arranged in an upright slide container with two rows of slide drawers, comprising 10 slide drawers in total. Slides were arranged in the container largely alphabetically either by bridge or river name, or location name, and possibly also by type of bridge. Slides were physically arranged from top to bottom and across both rows. The container was labelled as follows: "Concrete 1 - 5 | Stone Arch 6 - 7 | Steel Arch 8 also Brick | Stone Arch Concrete Arch 2 - pt 5 | Concrete Girder pt 5-6". Description: Transparency slides of Mr E G Williams' (Edmund Gardner Williams') travel in New Zealand between 1958 and 1959. This sheet of slides shows coastal ranges, and sheep being driven along a road near Gisborne; Tokomaru Bay; a railcar at Gisborne Railway Station; Matawai township; scenes in Whakatane and the Whakatane River; farming scenes at Holmridge farm at Waihue, near Dargaville, owned by Vernon and Ruth Woods, and a photograph of the Woods family. The family include Vernon and Ruth, and Clive and Barbara Woods, and "young Vern". Mr Williams spent Christmas 1958 with the Woods family. Slides on this sheet are numbered 579-603 with gaps for those removed for lectures on New Zealand. Arrangement: Mr Williams transferred slides (nos. 579, 582, 592, 594-595, 597, 599) showing a view of Gisborne; sheep droving near Gisborne; scenes at Holmridge farm including a group of a truck in a hayfield, and members of the Wood family. They were were from this sequence as part of a representative collection on New Zealand for various lectures which he gave when he returned to England.
