Description: Set of photographs of drainage operations on the Hauraki Plains. Spoil from the canal and ditch construction was used as foundation for roads so road construction is also shown. The photographs include two men hay harvesting in front of a small house, a man in a flax field, a dredge at work, the labourers' camp, boats moored at a jetty in Ngatea. Description: Photographic prints mainly of the construction of Monowai Dam, but also other public works. Taken circa 1920s and 1930s by Ralph Meredith Jenkin. Sinclair Trotter, Tom Sheppard, and Jenkin are identified in photographs of the construction of the Monowai Dam. Other people, including surveyors, are unidentified. The surge chamber (surge tank) and pipelines are featured. A photograph of a model of the Monowai Power House, made by Jenkin, is included. Photographs of other public works include the Power Board Depot at Ngatea, signal gang railway camp at Arthur's Pass, construction of Otira Tunnel and power station, construction of Homer tunnel, and the Invercargill substation. Stanley Sargent is identified standing by a signal box in railway photographs but other men are unidentified. Railway camp photographs show tents with snow on the ground around them. Description: Transparencies of concrete construction in New Zealand, taken by Geoffrey Thornton or Jocelyn Thornton. Each slide mount is annotated with the name or brief description, and/or the location, of the concrete structure. Dates and photographer name are sometimes annotated. Buildings/structures and locations annotated on the slide mounts include cement works manager's house at Mahurangi [Warkworth], dairy at Maraekakaho, Firth's tower near Matamata, Public Trust Office in Napier, Devonport Flats in New Plymouth, former Egmont Brewery in New Plymouth, former dairy factory at Ngatea, hangar interior at Ohakea, cookshop at Okuku Pass Station, Aotea canoe memorial at Pātea, concrete tankstand at Bedford Road in Taranaki, Metze house at Pleasant Point, concrete house at 74 Te Nga Wai Road in Pleasant Point, hall and library at Portland, and 'Mercerdale' at Puerua. Title supplied by Library. Few slides have dates annotated Arrangement: Transparencies were arranged in a six-row, 43 slides per row, metal case. The case was not labelled; the order appears have begun as largely alphabetical by location, name of building/structure, or name of station/farm; however, arrangement becomes more disordered in the last two rows of the case.
