Map

[Creator unknown]: Wairarapa Greyton [Greytown], northward, to Carterton, and Masterton...

Date: [1865-?]

Reference: MapColl-832.45a/[1865-?]/Acc.43714

Description: Sketch map showing topographical features of an area of land in the Wairarapa from the Tauherenikau River at the bottom of the map to the Taratahi Plain at the top of the map. The left side shows the Moroa Plain and the Waiohine River and the right side shows the Wangaehu [Whangaehu] River. The Ruamahanga River is shown running from the top to the bottom of the map. The locations of the townships of Carterton and Greyton [Greytown] are identified and two areas named as Kaikoka [Ahikouka] and Papawai. Morrison's farm [possibly Morison's Bush] is also identified. Two spot heights are named as Haldon Hill and Warleigh Hill. Red lines suggest possible roads as one is identified as "new line of road". An annotation written at the top right corner of the map where six dots point to a river dividing into two, states "Hence [indecipherable word] junction of the Waingawa & Ruamahanga is 1.3/4 miles". The farm identified as "Morison's farm" was a farm station initially called Hakeke, later Glenmorven, located near Greytown, Wairarapa. From 1846 it was run by Hugh Morrison (1782-1872) and Anne, nee Turner (1800?-1844). The area is known as Morison's Bush or Morrison's Bush. Two branches of the Morison/ Morrison family spell their name differently. The family at Greytown use “Morison” – those at Blairlogie, near Masterton use the double ‘r’. Quantity: 1 manuscript map(s). Physical Description: Ink and wash on paper glued to linen backing, coloured. Scale not given, 36.9 cm x 49 cm. Processing information: Record updated 4 November 2023 to add information about Hakeke station.

Norman, Edmund, 1820-1875 :[Wairarapa (or Waikato) settlement? Kaiapoi Pa, Canterbury? ...

Date: 1842 - 1850 - 1845 - 1860

By: Norman, Edmund, 1820-1875

Reference: A-113-003

Description: Three Maori seated in the foreground at the edge of a curved river bank with the palisades and a whare or part of a pa to the right. Cabbage trees, flax and manuka trees and other taller trees on a plain. In the middle ground is a European house and outbuildings surrounded by a fence, at the foot of a prominent hill, with other hills in the background to the left. The scene bears a strong resemblance to a view of Kaiapoi, early 1850s, a watercolour in the Canterbury Museum by Charles Haubro. However, the hills in the background make a location further inland in Canterbury more likely. Norman was in the Wellington Region from 1842 to 1845. He is not known to have visited the Waikato area, a location suggested by the Auckland seller of the drawing. He is known to have visited as far north as Auckland itself. In the 1850s until his death in 1872 he was based in the South Island, in Canterbury and South Canterbury, and his undated drawing of Nelson is also in the Library's collection. One possible location for this view is Rangitumau, with the prominent hill being Mount Rangitumau (north of Masterton in the Wairarapa) and the river being either the Whangaehu or the Kopuaranga. If the scene is a Wairarapa one, it is likely to date from between 1842 to 1845. Other Titles - Rangitumau, Wairarapa? Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - Ed Norman Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Pencil, sepia and blue pen and ink 196 x 248 mm
